Thales Partners with SFO Technologies for RBE2 Radar Production in India

In a significant move to bolster domestic defense manufacturing, Thales has partnered with India-based SFO Technologies to produce complex wired structures for the RBE2 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. This radar system is integral to the Rafale combat aircraft, which is currently in service with the Indian Armed Forces.

The RBE2 radar, a critical sensor developed by Thales for the Rafale platform designed by Dassault Aviation, is known for its capabilities in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, including essential functions such as target tracking and electronic warfare.

This partnership marks the first order of its kind for SFO Technologies regarding the RBE2 radar, aligning with Thales’ efforts to localize production in India. While the specific financial details of the contract and the number of radars involved have not been disclosed, the contract signifies a strategic move towards enhancing local defense capabilities.

This announcement follows India’s decision in 2023 to acquire 26 Rafale aircraft for the Indian Navy, intended for use in carrier-based operations. Under the new contract, SFO Technologies will be responsible for various manufacturing processes, including wiring, assembly, and integration of the radar-related structures.

The initiative to localize manufacturing aims to strengthen supply chain resilience while reducing dependency on foreign production for critical defense systems. India’s “Make in India” policy plays a vital role in this context, as it encourages foreign original equipment manufacturers to procure components locally and to share selected technologies with Indian industries.

Thales has been actively increasing its presence in the Indian market in recent years, expanding its investments in areas such as electronics, radar sub-systems, and aerospace manufacturing. This partnership with SFO Technologies is aligned with India’s broader strategy to expand domestic participation in defense production, promoting self-reliance within the sector.
