Thyssenkrupp and Ulstein Verft Partner for Norwegian Navy Frigate Bid

Germany’s thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has partnered with Norway’s Ulstein Verft for a potential bid to construct the next-generation frigates for the Royal Norwegian Navy. This joint venture comes in response to the Norwegian Navy’s requirement to procure five to six vessels aimed at replacing the aging Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates, which are equipped primarily for anti-submarine warfare and armed with eight Naval Strike Missiles.

The specifics of this procurement plan have been detailed in the 2024 Fleet Plan, which highlights the navy’s urgent need for modern vessels. A number of contenders are in the running for this project, including well-established designs such as the British Type 26, the German F127, the American Constellation class, and the French FDI.

If successful, the contract awarded to thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Ulstein Verft would lead to significant domestic production in Norway, contributing positively to the local economy. Lars Lühr Olsen, Managing Director of Ulstein Verft, expressed confidence in the capabilities of the partnership, stating, “thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has long traditions in designing and building naval ships, while Ulstein has long experience in commercial vessels with unique designs and solutions for demanding marine operations.” He emphasized the complementary strengths of both companies, which carry rich industrial legacies in shipbuilding across distinct markets focused on ship design and construction. The firms are recognized for their advanced, outfitting-intensive vessels that meet the growing needs of modern naval operations.

In a related development, thyssenkrupp’s F127 frigate has recently received procurement approval from the German Navy. This new vessel will be developed based on thyssenkrupp’s MEKO A-400 Air & Missile Defense warship concept and is expected to integrate the advanced AEGIS combat management system. The F127 frigates are projected to begin replacing the German Navy’s current fleet of F124 Sachsen-class vessels in the early 2030s, marking a significant upgrade in capabilities as the navy adapts to evolving maritime security challenges.
