Top Military Operations Conducted By Indian Armed Forces

The Indian Armed Forces are known for their involvement in a wide range of tasks and operations. Not just averting the infiltration and maintaining the security of the nation, these forces always stand ahead in neutralizing all kinds of situations emerging in the nation internally. While some were conducted out of the nation to handle the situation, emerged by the imbalance of power or critical military circumstances. Some of the military operations that were conducted by the Indian Armed Forces are:

  1. Operation Trident – an offensive operation led by Indian Navy and launched on Pakistan’s port city of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Operation Trident saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region. India celebrates its Navy Day annually on 4 December to mark this operation. Trident was followed up by Operation Python three days later.
  2. Operation Python – Follow-up to Operation Trident, was the code name of a naval attack launched on West Pakistan’s port city of Karachi by the Indian Navy during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. After the first attack during Operation Trident on the Port of Karachi, Pakistan stepped up aerial surveillance of its coast as the presence of large Indian Navy ships gave the impression that another attack was being planned.
  3. Operation Meghdoot – This operation was conducted to acquire the Siachen glacier after both the sides (India and Pakistan) opened the area for mountaineering expeditions. It was launched on 13th April, 1984. Indian Army took action and claimed the area, known as the highest battlefield.
  4. Operation Cactus – The operation was launched in order to pacify the agitation in Maldives in 1988. A group of Maldivian people planned to overthrow the government. Analyzing the situation, Abdul Gayoom, then president of Maldives called for help from India and some other south Indian nations. India responded swiftly and overcame the situation.
  5. Operation Pawan – Indian Peacekeeping Force conducted the operation in 1987 to get Jaffna from LTTE. The operation completed with the sacrifice of 216 soldiers. The operation was highly violent and crucial as per the relations of India and Srilanka.
  6. Operation Vijay – The operation was conducted by the Indian Air Force and Army in 1999 after the terrorists occupied some posts of India. The operation raised the names of Vikram Batra, Manoj Pandey and Anuj Nayyar as the Heroes of the war. Many other precious soldiers lost their lives in reoccupying the posts.
  7. Operation Safed Sagar – Operation Safed Sagar was the codename assigned to the Indian Air Force’s strike to support the Ground troops during Operation Vijay that was aimed to flush out Regular and Irregular troops of the Pakistani Army from vacated Indian Positions in the Kargil sector along the Line of Control. It was the first large scale use of airpower in the Jammu and Kashmir region since the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
  8. Operation Apache – Operation Apache By 9 PARA SF Regiment. This operation was never made public because whatever the 9th battalion of the Parachute Regiment did, will leave you with answers to many questions. Operation Apache was a company level operation of 9 Para SF which started from an LoC hugging sector in the pitch-dark night in 19th November 2001. This operation was so special and so critical that the CO of the battalion himself was leading the operation and it is said that the government of that time does not even knew about it. Later, this turned out to be one of the most important operations to restore peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
  9. Operation Black Tornado – Conducted in November, 2008, the operation was conducted by NSG during the terrorist attack in Mumbai. 9 hostages from Nariman point, 300 from Taj hotel and 250 hostages from Oberoi hotel were rescued from the site. The operation was successfully conduced and huge loss of Sandeep Unnikrishnan in this operation will always be remembered.
  10. 2015 Indian counter-insurgency operation in Myanmar -On 9 June 2015, India announced that it had conducted a cross-border operation against insurgents belonging to NSCN-K. According to India, the operation took place in Myanmar and it was in response to ambush of Indian Army convoy of 6 Dogra Regiment in Chandel district of Manipur. Indian officials said that they had crossed the border and inflicted significant casualties against the NSCN-K. According to Indian media reports, around 38 insurgents belonging to NSCN-K were killed during the operation. The operation lasted around 40 minutes.
  11. 2016 Surgical Strike Special Ops Across Loc in Pak: On 29 September 2016, eleven days after the Uri attack, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes against suspected militants in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), said that it had received “very credible and specific information” about “terrorist teams” who were preparing to “carry out infiltration and conduct terrorist strikes inside Jammu and Kashmir and in various metros in other states”. The Indian action was meant to pre-empt their infiltration.
  12. Operation All Out: Operation All Out (OAO) a joint offensive launched by Indian security forces in 2017 to flush out militants and terrorists in Kashmir until there is complete peace in the state. Operation All-Out includes the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, BSF and IB. It was launched against numerous militant groups including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen and Al-Badr. The operation was initiated with the consent of Ministry for Home Affairs Government of India following the unrest of subsequent militant and terrorist attacks in the region such as the Amarnath Yatra terror attack on 10 July 2017 in which eight Hindu pilgrims were killed and at least 18 others injured. More Than 300-400 terrorist has been neutralised and still on going.
  13. Operation BandarBalakot Stike 2019: The 2019 Balakot airstrike was conducted by India in the early morning hours of February 26 when Indian warplanes crossed the de facto border in the disputed region of Kashmir, and dropped bombs in the vicinity of the town of Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan.
  14. Operation Snow Leopard: The Indian Army launched Operation Snow Leopard after China failed to move back and restore status quo ante in eastern Ladakh. The Army finally launched the operation, occupied a number of strategic heights and strengthened its presence in the region. On June 15, 2020 at Galwan Valley, Col B Santosh Babu Commanding Officer, 16 Bihar led the Quick Reaction Force of 16 Bihar and attached troops tasked to evict the PLA OP from Gen AY Nala and move further to Patrolling Point 14. The column successfully evicted the PLA OP from Y Nala and reached PP 14 where a fierce skirmish broke out between the IA and PLA troops. Col B Santosh Babu led from the front and his troops fought gallantly in hand-to-hand combat, causing heavy casualties to the PLA. In the ensuing fight twenty “Gallants of Galwan” achieved martyrdom.
