Indian Armed Forces are known for their strategic planning and have bagged numerous success stories and honour and respect from various nations abroad. Our leadership activities and goodwill motto to maintain peace and security have been the prime factor to be one among the best. Since times immemorial, our forces have proved that they are very efficient and are strong enough and we can happily live and breathe in this nation. Giving supreme sacrifices, many warriors have taught us that nation is above everything. Here is a list of some of the most important operations conducted by the Indian Armed Forces, somewhere even the paramilitary was also included in the helping of the carrying out of missions. 1. Operation Polo 1948 Indian armed forces ended the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad and led to the incorporation of the princely state of Hyderabad in Southern India, into the Indian Union.The ruler of the most powerful princely state Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, was an aristocratic ruler and maintained an irregular army of Razakars. By Sardar Patel’s plan, Army and Police led by Maj Gen J N Chaudhuri attacked and covered Hyderabad. Mir Osman later signed Instrument of Accession.
2. Operation Vijay 1961 Code name given for Liberation of Goa.Portugal continued to hold a handful of exclaves on the Indian subcontinent after 1947 — the districts of Goa, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli — collectively known as the Estado da Índia.It involved air, sea and land strikes for over 36 hours, and was a decisive victory for India, ending 451 years of rule by Portugal over its remaining exclaves in India.Goa was placed under military administration headed by Kunhiraman Palat Candeth as Lieutenant Governor. Later it was granted statehood in 1987.
3. Operation Trident 1971 Offensive operation launched by the Indian Navy on December 4 – 5 on Pakistan’s port city of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.This operation saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region.India suffered no losses, Pakistan lost a minesweeper, a destroyer, a cargo vessel carrying ammunition, and fuel storage tanks in Karachi. Another destroyer was also severely damaged and eventually scrapped. We celebrate Navy Day on December 4th to mark the success of this operation.
4. Operation Meghna Heli Bridge 1971 Aerial operation of Indian and Bangladeshi allied forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. It took place on 9 December, when the Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifted the Mukti Bahini and the IV Corps of the Indian Army from Brahmanbaria to Raipura in Narsingdi over the River Meghna, bypassing the destroyed Meghna Bridge and Pakistani defences in Ashuganj.
5. Operation Blue Star 1984 Indian military action carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984 to remove militant religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the buildings of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) complex in Amritsar, Punjab. This was taken up after serious of negotiations with the militants by Indira Gandhi. When the negotiations failed, she launched this operation.Operation Woodrose was taken up to counter the protests that came after this operation.
6. Operation Meghdoot 1984 Launched on 13 April 1984, this military operation was the first assault launched in the highest battlefield in the world. The military action resulted in Indian troops gaining control of the entire Siachen Glacier.
7. Operation Pawan 1987 Operations by the Indian Peace Keeping Force to take control of Jaffna from the LTTE in late 1987 to enforce the disarmament of the LTTE as a part of the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord.Operation Viraat, which occurred in 1988, after Operation Pawan, was an anti-insurgency operation launched by the IPKF against the LTTE in April 1988 in Northern Sri Lanka
8. Operation Trishul 1988 Along with Operation Viraat, was an anti-insurgency operation launched by the IPKF against the LTTE in April 1988 in Northern Sri Lanka.
9. Operation Checkmate 1988 It was an anti-insurgency operation carried out by the IPKF against the LTTE in the Vadamarachi area of northern Sri Lanka in June 1988.
10. Operation Cactus 1988 Para commandos of Indian Army and MARCOS of Indian Navy oust Tamil nationalist mercenaries of PLOTE (People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam) who instigated a coup in Malé in the Maldives.
11. Operation Vijay 1999 Indian operation to push back the infiltrators from the Kargil Sector, in the 1999 Kargil War.
12. Operation Safed Sagar 1999 The Indian Air Force’s role in acting jointly with the Ground troops during the Kargil war that was aimed at flushing out Regular and Irregular troops of the Pakistani Army from vacated Indian Positions in the Kargil sector along the Line of Control. It was the first large scale use of Airpower in the Jammu and Kashmir region since the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Operation Black Tornado 2008 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, an extremist Islamist terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai.The attacks began on Wednesday 26 November and lasted until Saturday 29 November 2008. At least 174 people died, including 9 attackers, and more than 300 were wounded.Indian Armed Forces, along with the paramilitary forces successfully stopped these bombings. Our military then went into many changes and many new offices were established after this incident including the National Investigation Agency.
