In a recent statement, US President Donald Trump revealed that his plan to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is open for negotiation and not a final ultimatum. He emphasized his desire to see an end to the hostilities, saying, “One way or the other, we have to get it ended.” His ambitious 28-point proposal includes significant stipulations such as the cession of Ukrainian territory, a reduction of its military forces, and a commitment from Ukraine never to join NATO.
When pressed by journalists on whether this proposal was his ultimate offer to Ukraine, Trump made it clear that it was not. This has raised questions about the flexibility of the terms he laid out and how receptive Ukrainian officials might be to such conditions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has met this proposal with measured skepticism, indicating that he plans to present alternative options for peace. His cautious stance reflects broader concerns within Ukraine regarding the potential implications of conceding territory and military strength.
In parallel, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a willingness to discuss the details of Trump’s plan. However, he warned that if Ukraine were to reject it, Russia would continue its military offensive that began in February 2022.
Trump highlighted a target date of November 27, coinciding with the American Thanksgiving holiday, as a potential deadline for Zelensky to agree to a deal. He remarked that if Zelensky finds the terms unsatisfactory, Ukraine should continue to resist. “At some point he’s going to have to accept something,” Trump noted, underscoring his belief that a resolution must be reached.
In light of these developments, US officials are expected to engage in critical discussions surrounding the proposal. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, are set to arrive in Geneva to further explore the feasibility of the proposed plan. European officials are also anticipated to join the discussions in Switzerland, signaling a collaborative effort to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its broader geopolitical implications.
