UK MoD Launches Tender for New Lightweight Assault Machine Gun Under Project TROUBLER

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has initiated a competitive tender process for a new lightweight 5.56mm assault machine gun, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of dismounted troops. This initiative, designated as “Project TROUBLER,” is designed to fill the operational gaps left by the phased-out L110 A2 machine gun, a model that weighed in at 7.2 kilograms (15.8 pounds) and was extensively utilized during military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A tender notice dated February 14 outlines the requirements for the new weapon. The anticipated specifications call for a firearm that is not only lighter but also incorporates modern enhancements to improve the mobility and combat efficiency of infantry soldiers. Additionally, the new machine gun must be interoperable with existing systems, ensuring that it is compatible with various accessories and fire control systems used on the battlefield.

Interested manufacturers have been invited to demonstrate their capabilities by submitting detailed qualifications and responses through a Dynamic Pre-Qualification Questionnaire. The MoD will assess all bids, with a focus on key criteria such as weight, performance, and overall suitability for frontline use.

The successful applicant will be granted a production contract potentially valued at up to 4 million euros (approximately $4.2 million). Despite the tender being released only recently, FN Herstal, a Belgian arms manufacturer, is already regarded as a strong candidate for the contract. The company might propose its FN Minimi 5.56 Mk3 Light Machine Gun; however, its heavier weight of 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) could hinder its acceptance in the competition.

As an alternative, FN Herstal may present the FN Evolys Ultralight Machine Gun, which weighs just 5.5 kilograms (12.1 pounds). This model is marketed as having the ability to “fire like a machine gun” while being as manageable as a rifle, which aligns well with the MoD’s core requirements for the new weapon system. The outcome of this tender process could significantly influence the equipment and capabilities of British infantry forces in future operations.
