The UK has unveiled its highly secretive Gravehawk air defense system, specifically designed to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid escalating aerial threats. Images released by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) showcase the innovative system, which features two modified R-73 infrared-guided missiles mounted on a containerized launcher unit. This launcher is attached to a military truck chassis, providing mobility and versatility in deployment.
One of the standout features of the Gravehawk is its integrated crane, enabling the efficient loading of new missiles into the launcher. Additionally, a separate launch control unit is situated in the back of a 4×4 vehicle, indicating that the system allows for standoff firing capabilities. This enhances operational safety and flexibility for Ukrainian forces, as they will be able to engage aerial targets from a greater distance.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the significance of 2025 in the ongoing conflict, stating, “2025 is a critical year for the war in Ukraine.” He praised the Ukrainian fighters for their courage and highlighted the powerful combination of their bravery with Western support. Healey also acknowledged the continued risks posed by a still-threatening Russia, advocating for increased measures to ensure peace through strength.
The introduction of the Gravehawk is particularly timely. First presented to the public in January 2025, the system aims to address Ukraine’s urgent need for enhanced air defense amidst Russia’s persistent aerial assaults. The Gravehawk adapts Soviet-era R-73 air-to-air missiles for ground-based launches, allowing Ukrainian forces to intercept various threats, including drones, cruise missiles, and hostile aircraft.
To enhance detection capabilities, the system is equipped with a high-performance camera that utilizes passive infrared technology. This allows for target identification without disclosing the Gravehawk’s location. The data captured by the camera is relayed to a command module, enabling operators to lock onto threats once a heat signature is identified.
Operationally, each Gravehawk system requires a crew of five personnel. The development of this sophisticated air defense solution is attributed to collaboration among several British defense manufacturers, demonstrating a significant investment of resources and expertise. Spanning just 18 months to develop, the Gravehawk project was completed at a cost of approximately 6 million pounds ($7.5 million). A total of 15 units are anticipated to be delivered to Ukraine within the year, marking a critical enhancement to the nation’s defense capabilities.
