The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has taken a significant step in enhancing the capabilities of its armed forces by approving a domestically manufactured anti-drone pistol. This development comes amid escalating concerns over drone warfare, emphasizing the need for individual soldier protection against hostile aerial threats.
Constructed as a single piece rather than being assembled from multiple components, the compact anti-drone pistol weighs slightly more than 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds). It boasts an impressive battery life of 60 minutes, suitable for the high-stakes environment in which it will be deployed. Designed for personal use, the handheld device generates an output of 50 watts, which allows it to jam enemy drone signals operating within the radio frequency band of 700 to 1,000 megahertz, effectively disrupting signals at distances of up to 100 meters (328 feet).
This latest innovation in electronic warfare is particularly noteworthy as it targets specific Russian-made drones that have recently adapted their operations to shift into the 700 to 1,000 megahertz frequency range, a tactic aimed at evading previous countermeasures employed by Ukraine. The introduction of this anti-drone pistol represents a critical enhancement to Ukraine’s electronic warfare arsenal, enabling soldiers to respond effectively to evolving aerial threats.
The rise of drone usage in combat, including tactics involving swarms of drones, necessitates that soldiers have comprehensive protection measures at their disposal. In response to this emerging threat, Ukrainian defense firms have been quick to innovate. Earlier this month, one company revealed a backpackable electronic warfare system, equipped with a special protective hood designed to mitigate risks from high electromagnetic exposure, which can lead to cognitive issues for soldiers in the field.
Looking ahead, plans are already in motion for the deployment of a net gun in 2024. This new technology includes a miniature handheld version aimed at ensnaring enemy drones during combat, further diversifying Ukraine’s counter-drone capabilities. As the situation continues to evolve, these advancements are expected to play a vital role in safeguarding troops and military assets against the increasing use of drones in warfare.
