In a recent session of the United Nations Security Council, the UN aid chief emphasized the pressing need for the people of Gaza to reclaim their dignity amidst ongoing humanitarian challenges. Tom Fletcher addressed the council, highlighting the critical situation faced by residents and urging improvements beyond mere survival.
Fletcher pointed out that following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on October 10, there has been a noticeable increase in aid deliveries, with approximately 100 shipments entering Gaza each day. However, he stressed that these improvements represent only the bare minimum required by the Palestinian population and echoed the demands of international law.
“There is a dire need for more than just basic survival,” Fletcher stated. He lamented that while current conditions may prevent immediate catastrophe, they still contribute to a larger humanitarian crisis. He implored the international community not to settle for a standard where children merely consume enough calories to survive while experiencing constant violence and insecurity. “We must aim higher than this,” he insisted. “It is not enough to silence the weapons — we must restore dignity.”
In his address, Fletcher called for the urgent opening of all crossing points into Gaza, alongside an immediate lifting of Israeli restrictions affecting the entry of essential goods, such as medical supplies and fuel.
Bushra Khalidi, a humanitarian officer representing Oxfam, also spoke during the session, urging member states to respond with urgency and humanity to the crisis. Her remarks underscored the need for coordinated global action to address the dire circumstances faced by those in Gaza, amplifying the calls for both immediate relief and long-term solutions.
