Multilateral Military Exercise Khaan Quest 2026

The Indian Army is participating in the multinational military exercise Khaan Quest 2026, scheduled from 20 June to 3 July 2026 at the Five Hills Training Area in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The exercise serves as an important platform for strengthening military cooperation among participating nations and improving interoperability during international peacekeeping missions.

Originally launched in 2003 as a bilateral exercise between the United States and Mongolia, Khaan Quest evolved into a multinational peacekeeping exercise in 2006. The 2026 edition marks its 23rd iteration and will bring together armed forces from numerous countries under the framework of United Nations peace support operations.

India’s contingent consists of 40 personnel, primarily drawn from a battalion of the Jat Regiment, supported by soldiers from other arms and services. The exercise focuses on enhancing operational coordination in multinational environments through activities such as joint planning, patrolling, checkpoint management, search operations, civilian evacuation procedures, counter-IED drills, combat first aid, and casualty evacuation.

The participation reflects India’s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts and international military cooperation.

Indian Coast Guard Inducts Indigenous Air Cushion Vehicle

In a significant boost to India’s maritime capabilities, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) inducted the first of six indigenous Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) in Goa on 18 June 2026. The hovercraft has been built by Chowgule & Company Private Limited under the government’s drive for indigenous defence production.

The ACV is designed to improve the Coast Guard’s operational efficiency across diverse maritime missions, including coastal surveillance, search and rescue operations, disaster response, and law enforcement activities. Its ability to operate effectively in shallow waters and difficult coastal terrains makes it a valuable asset for maritime security.

The induction ceremony was attended by senior Coast Guard officials and representatives from India’s shipbuilding industry. The project supports the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and reducing reliance on imported equipment.

The contract for the acquisition of six ACVs was signed between the Ministry of Defence and Chowgule & Company, highlighting India’s focus on self-reliance and modernization of maritime assets.

Bhoomi Pujan for 10,000-Ton Aluminium Extrusion Press

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to perform the Bhoomi Pujan for a state-of-the-art 10,000-ton Aluminium Extrusion Press at the Yantra India Limited (YIL) Ordnance Factory in Ambajhari, Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The project represents a major advancement in India’s defence manufacturing infrastructure. Once operational, the facility will produce large, high-strength, and precision aluminium alloy extrusions required for defence and aerospace applications.

The new extrusion press will significantly reduce dependence on imported aluminium components and support indigenous production of critical defence equipment. It is expected to enhance India’s capability to manufacture advanced platforms and systems while strengthening the domestic defence industrial base.

The ceremony will be attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, and representatives of Yantra India Limited.

Bharat Forge Defence Arm Partners with US-Based AM General

Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), the defence subsidiary of Bharat Forge, has entered into a strategic partnership with American military vehicle manufacturer AM General to develop advanced mounted artillery gun systems for the international market.

The collaboration aims to provide modern armed forces with highly mobile, all-terrain, and all-weather artillery platforms capable of delivering effective firepower in complex battlefield conditions. The partnership is expected to open opportunities in global defence markets and support allied nations seeking advanced artillery solutions.

The proposed system integrates KSSL’s proven mounted artillery platform with a 155 mm, 52-calibre cannon equipped with Soft Recoil Technology (SRT). This technology reduces recoil forces while maintaining high operational effectiveness.

The artillery system features advanced fire-control capabilities, automated loading assistance, and the ability to conduct both direct and indirect fire missions. With a strike range exceeding 40 kilometres and onboard ammunition storage, the platform is designed to meet the demands of modern mobile warfare.

If selected by the US government, deliveries of the artillery system are expected to begin in 2027.

Pakistan’s Hangor-Class Submarines and Regional Maritime Dynamics

The induction of Pakistan’s first Hangor-class submarine marks an important development in South Asia’s maritime security environment. Developed with Chinese assistance, these submarines are based on the Chinese Type 039A design and feature Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.

Under a 2015 agreement, Pakistan plans to acquire eight Hangor-class submarines, with four being built in China and four constructed domestically at Karachi Shipyard through technology transfer arrangements.

AIP technology allows submarines to remain submerged for extended periods without surfacing, significantly improving stealth, endurance, and operational flexibility. This capability makes detection by aircraft and surface vessels more difficult and enhances long-range deployment potential.

Recent reports suggest that Pakistan may seek a more sustained naval presence in the Bay of Bengal, a region where it has not maintained operational activity since the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Such a move would represent a notable strategic shift, as the Bay of Bengal has traditionally been an area of strong Indian naval influence.

India currently operates a diverse submarine fleet, including Kalvari-class, Sindhughosh-class, and Shishumar-class conventional submarines, along with nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines of the Arihant-class. The Indian Navy is also working to integrate indigenous AIP systems developed by DRDO into the Kalvari-class fleet.

The Hangor programme reflects the growing strategic and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan, extending beyond submarine construction to training, sensors, combat systems, and operational doctrines. This evolving partnership is expected to influence the future maritime security architecture of the Indian Ocean region.
