The U.S. Air Force has initiated a significant collaboration with Skydio by awarding two early contracts worth millions of dollars. This partnership aims to bolster the deployment of small drones within Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units.
As part of these contracts, Skydio X10D systems will be supplied to various Air Combat Command units. TACP airmen are set to utilize these drones to enhance battlefield awareness, conduct reconnaissance, and support communication efforts. Typically, TACP teams work in conjunction with ground forces, playing a crucial role in identifying targets and orchestrating air support.
In addition to their application in TACP units, EOD personnel are also adopting these drone systems. The drones will assist during routine operations on base as well as in deployed missions, providing a multi-functional tool for critical tasks.
Over the next 18 months, more deliveries of Skydio systems are planned, indicating a sustained commitment to integrating these advanced technologies into military operations.
Beyond these frontline applications, the U.S. Air Force has been expanding its use of small drones for various operational needs, including base security and aircraft inspections. Security forces units are already employing Skydio systems for perimeter monitoring and the protection of installations.
One notable development is at Travis Air Force Base, where the 60th Maintenance Group has initiated the service’s first drone-based inspection program for C-17 aircraft. This program has reportedly led to significant reductions in aircraft inspection time, highlighting the efficiency gains facilitated by drone technology.
This initiative is part of a larger modernization strategy designed to accelerate maintenance processes while minimizing risks to personnel, showcasing the Air Force’s commitment to leveraging innovative solutions to enhance operational effectiveness.
