The U.S. State Department has taken a significant step towards enhancing Saudi Arabia’s military capabilities by approving a foreign military sale of Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) II All-Up-Rounds, with a price tag of approximately $100 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has confirmed that the Kingdom has requested up to 2,000 units of these laser-guided munitions, aimed at improving precision targeting while reducing collateral damage in military operations.
This sale encompasses not only the APKWS weapons but also a range of additional support, including spare parts, advanced support equipment, missile software, and thorough training along with logistical assistance. If the deal receives the necessary congressional approval, it would significantly enhance Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities, equipping it to tackle both immediate and foreseeable threats.
The DSCA emphasized that the sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy objectives by bolstering the security of a key partner in the Gulf Region, which is viewed as a stabilizing force for political and economic progress in the area.
The APKWS II, developed by BAE Systems, is recognized as a highly effective weapon that converts standard rockets into precision-guided munitions, thereby greatly improving their accuracy and lethality in conflict scenarios. It utilizes the Mk66 Mod 4 rocket motor and features a 10-pound (about 4.5 kg) high-explosive warhead. Notably, the system can reach speeds of up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) per second, showcasing remarkable performance in various combat situations.
The APKWS has been employed successfully to neutralize threats such as Houthi one-way attack drones, demonstrating its reliability and effectiveness in real-world military engagements. With an estimated cost of $22,000 per unit, the APKWS II provides a cost-efficient method for countering lower-cost aerial threats, reinforcing its position as a valuable asset for the Saudi military.
As the sale awaits congressional review, its approval would not only deepen military ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia but also enhance the Kingdom’s operational readiness amid ongoing regional tensions.
