US Approves $162 Million Torpedo Sale to Norway

The US State Department has given the green light for a significant foreign military sale to Norway, involving MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedoes valued at approximately $162 million. Norway’s request includes up to 50 torpedo systems, which will be complemented by various components, containers, and software required for their operation.

This sale goes beyond just the torpedoes; it also encompasses critical training, support equipment, and spare parts necessary for maintenance. In addition, the package includes contractor engineering, technical assistance, and logistical support. The principal contractor for this deal will be RTX Corporation, located in Arlington, Virginia.

To facilitate program oversight and support for this military sale, there will be a temporary deployment of US government and contractor personnel to Norway. The US government has emphasized that this sale aligns with its foreign policy and national security objectives, bolstering the security of a key NATO ally. It aims to enhance Norway’s capabilities in addressing both current and potential threats while improving interoperability with allied forces.

The MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedo itself is designed as an advanced anti-submarine weapon, effectively utilized by US Navy surface ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. Its guidance and control system employs commercial-off-the-shelf processors and upgraded tactical software, enabling operations even in challenging environments. Optimized for shallow waters, the torpedo is capable of tracking, classifying, and engaging underwater targets.

Key specifications of the MK 54 MOD 0 include a length of 106.9 inches (271.5 centimeters), a diameter of 12.7 inches (32.4 centimeters), and a weight of 607 pounds (275 kilograms). It features a 100-pound (45-kilogram) high-explosive warhead. This versatile weapon system has been supplied by the US to numerous countries around the globe.

Earlier this year, the US government also authorized a similar sale of 20 MK 54 MOD 0 torpedoes to Saudi Arabia for $78.5 million. Furthermore, in 2024, a deal for 53 MK 54 torpedoes to India was approved, worth $175 million. Additionally, the US has sanctioned a potential sale of 80 MK 54 torpedoes to Germany for $300 million, aimed at integration with P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. These transactions underscore the growing international demand for advanced naval weaponry and the ongoing partnerships between the US and its allies.
