The US State Department has given the green light for a significant arms sale, allowing for the potential transfer of $370.9 million worth of AIM-9X Block II tactical missiles to Norway. This deal encompasses 300 of these advanced missiles, accompanied by training missiles, guidance units, and missile containers, which are crucial components for their operational readiness.
In addition to the missiles themselves, the sale will include vital support services such as software, training, and logistical assistance, ensuring that Norway’s military is fully equipped to integrate the new systems into their operations. The principal contractor for this sale will be RTX Corporation, located in Tucson, Arizona, a key player in the defense industry.
The US government has emphasized that this proposed sale aligns with its foreign policy objectives and national security strategies. By strengthening a NATO ally like Norway, the deal is expected to promote increased stability and economic progress across Europe. Additionally, it aims to enhance Norway’s capabilities to address both current and future threats, thereby ensuring that its aviation forces remain interoperable with those of the United States and other NATO member nations.
The AIM-9X Block II missile boasts advanced infrared-tracking technology and is compatible with a variety of aircraft platforms, including the F-15C Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and EA-18G Growler, making it a versatile asset for any air force. This missile system is not only utilized by the US military but is also supplied to allied forces around the globe.
This recent transaction comes on the heels of several other significant sales involving the AIM-9X missile system. In December 2024, Poland confirmed a $175-million contract for over 200 AIM-9X Block II air-to-air missiles. Earlier in 2023, RTX was awarded a $736-million contract by the US Navy for upgraded AIM-9X missiles, reflecting a push for improved performance and durability. Furthermore, in August 2024, the US approved Canada’s acquisition of hundreds of AIM-9X tactical missiles, valued at around $265 million, which includes both the Block II and more advanced Block II+ variants.
These developing arms deals underscore the growing emphasis on international military partnerships and cooperative security arrangements, particularly among NATO allies, as they seek to bolster their defense capabilities in an increasingly complex global landscape.
