US Approves $842 Million Sale of JASSM-ER Missiles to Denmark for F-35 Enhancement

The US Department of State has greenlit a significant defense agreement with Denmark, allowing for the potential sale of Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) valued at approximately $842 million. This acquisition aims to bolster the Royal Danish Air Force’s operational capabilities, particularly for its F-35 fighter jets.

Denmark’s formal request includes 200 of the advanced JASSM-ER missiles along with necessary logistics support services. Lockheed Martin, the leading aerospace and defense contractor, has been designated as the principal contractor for this deal.

According to a press release from the US Department of State, the proposed transaction is set to enhance Denmark’s ability to address both current and emerging threats. “The sale will provide the Royal Danish Air Force with enhanced long-range precision strike capabilities, thereby strengthening its F-35 aircraft operations,” the release explained. Officials also noted that Denmark is well-prepared to integrate these systems into its military framework without significant challenges.

The JASSM-ER missile itself boasts a remarkable operational range of approximately 620 miles (998 kilometers), allowing for effective engagement of heavily defended targets from a safe distance beyond the reach of enemy surface-to-air missile systems. It features a powerful 1,000-pound (450-kilogram) penetrating warhead capable of targeting both stationary and mobile threats.

Key attributes of the JASSM-ER include its stealth capabilities and advanced guidance systems. It navigates using GPS guidance coupled with an inertial navigation system for route planning, and it employs an imaging infrared seeker for precise terminal targeting, greatly enhancing strike accuracy.

Once deployed, the JASSM-ER will significantly expand the Royal Danish Air Force’s strike options against critical military assets such as command centers, air defense installations, airbases, logistics hubs, missile facilities, and other key targets, further solidifying Denmark’s defensive and offensive capabilities in the region.
