US Army Invests $640 Million in 155mm High Explosive Rounds to Boost Ammunition Production

The US Army is making a significant investment of nearly $640 million to procure 155mm High Explosive rounds, a critical step in enhancing its Special Ammunition and Weapons Systems (SAWS) program. This contract, which extends until July 10, 2027, has been awarded to Global Military Products under a firm-fixed-price arrangement. It represents one of the largest munitions acquisitions the army has made this year.

The SAWS program aims to acquire ammunition and weapons systems that have not undergone full Army safety testing or type classification. These “non-standard” systems often include legacy weapons utilized by allied nations, particularly those originally developed in the former Soviet Union or Eastern Bloc countries. In addition to enhancing the Army’s capabilities, SAWS also serves as a vital support mechanism for partners relying on these older platforms, ensuring interoperability while maintaining high safety standards.

As global demand for artillery ammunition rises, the Army views this contract as essential for ensuring a steady supply. Army spokesperson Steve Warren noted in July that production rates have surged to 40,000 shells per month, a dramatic increase from the approximately 15,000 rounds produced monthly in 2022. The Army is targeting a production goal of 100,000 rounds per month by mid-2026, highlighting its commitment to meet operational demands.

In a related initiative, the US Army awarded a contract to MSM Group North America in August for the construction of the Future Artillery Complex. This project is part of a broader modernization effort aimed at revitalizing the Department of Defense’s aging industrial base and is essential for bolstering production capacities of 155mm artillery rounds and replenishing stockpiles.

Overall, these developments underscore the Army’s proactive approach to enhancing its artillery capabilities and ensuring readiness in an increasingly complex global security environment.
