The US Navy has officially awarded a significant contract to Northrop Grumman, aimed at extending sustainment services for the E-2 Hawkeye tactical early warning aircraft. This initiative encompasses a range of critical support functions, including maintenance and technical assistance, addressing both common and unique requirements for the E-2C and E-2D variants of the aircraft.
The E-2 Hawkeye fleet not only serves the US Navy but also includes units sold through foreign military sales to various allied nations, including France, Japan, Taiwan, and Egypt. As a result, the contract reflects a commitment to maintaining operational readiness and technical superiority across multiple user communities.
The work stipulated in this contract will take place across several locations, including Florida, Japan, Ohio, and additional sites throughout the United States. This geographically diverse undertaking highlights the widespread operational footprint of the E-2 Hawkeye and the importance of maintaining its capabilities.
The US Navy’s E-2 Hawkeye is a remarkable aircraft, measuring 58 feet (18 meters) in length, with an impressive wingspan of 81 feet (25 meters), and a maximum weight of 43,000 pounds (19,504 kilograms). It is powered by either two Allison T-56-A427 engines or two Rolls-Royce T56-A-427A turboprop engines, each delivering around 5,100 horsepower. The aircraft is operated by a crew consisting of two pilots, three mission systems personnel, and an additional specialist for optional operations, enabling it to handle complex tasks effectively.
Performance-wise, the Hawkeye is capable of exceeding speeds of 300 knots (approximately 345 miles or 556 kilometers per hour) and boasts a range of 1,400 nautical miles (1,611 miles or 2,593 kilometers). Remarkably, it can operate at altitudes of up to 37,000 feet (11,278 meters), placing it in a position to perform its vital early warning and surveillance roles efficiently.
In line with ongoing advancements, the US Navy is set to enhance the operational capabilities of its Hawkeye fleet with the introduction of new router systems in September 2024. These upgrades are expected to significantly improve network resiliency during flight, enabling the aircraft to maintain robust communication and data capabilities in diverse and challenging environments.
