The US Navy has taken a significant step towards enhancing its aerial combat capabilities by contracting four major defense contractors—Anduril, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and General Atomics—to develop conceptual designs for a carrier-based collaborative combat aircraft (CCA). Often referred to as a “loyal wingman,” this initiative aims to create uncrewed aircraft that work in tandem with manned fighter jets, thereby augmenting their operational effectiveness.
The CCA program is designed to allow these uncrewed vehicles to share sensor data and undertake high-risk missions, which can extend both the range and survivability of carrier air wings. By leveraging advanced technologies, these aircraft are expected to operate alongside traditional fighter jets, facilitating missions that might be too dangerous for human pilots. This innovative approach reflects a growing trend in modern warfare toward greater use of autonomous systems.
In conjunction with the four primary contractors, Lockheed Martin has been enlisted to develop the common control system for the CCA. This system will be based on Skunk Works’s MDCX autonomy platform, which underwent testing last year with the General Atomics MQ-20 Avenger. The synergy between manned and unmanned systems is expected to revolutionize air combat, providing fleets with an essential edge during engagements.
As the naval forces continue to refine their operational strategies, the introduction of collaborative combat aircraft signifies a forward-thinking response to evolving threats and the complexities of modern warfare.
