US Urges Lebanon to Initiate Direct Talks with Israel Amid Escalating Tensions

A senior U.S. official called on Lebanon to initiate direct negotiations with Israel as concerns grow over escalating Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions, nearly a year after a truce was established. Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2022, Israeli military presence continues in five regions of southern Lebanon, alongside ongoing aerial operations.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun criticized Israel for responding to Lebanon’s negotiation overtures with increased military action. While indirect talks have taken place, U.S. envoy Tom Barrack emphasized the importance of moving towards direct discussions to alleviate rising tensions.

“The conversation needs to be with Israel. It just needs to be with Israel. Israel is ready,” Barrack stated to reporters at the IISS Manama Dialogue in Bahrain. He encouraged Lebanese leaders to approach Israel, suggesting that it could lead to a beneficial dialogue.

However, Barrack acknowledged the trepidation among Lebanese officials, who have valid reasons to be apprehensive about engaging in direct talks with their neighbor, given the volatile atmosphere. He noted that Hezbollah, despite its recent setbacks, remains financially viable and heavily armed.

Lebanon’s hesitation is understandable, considering the ongoing hostilities; however, Barrack assured that the U.S. would be willing to exert pressure on Israel to act reasonably if Lebanon were to pursue discussions. He compared Lebanon’s situation to that of Syria, which is currently exploring a security agreement with Israel, encouraging Lebanon to follow a similar path.

“The path is very clear that it needs to be to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv for a conversation along with Syria. Syria is showing the way,” Barrack remarked during a session in Manama, highlighting the regional dynamics at play.
