VEM Technologies to Deliver First Centre Fuselage Assembly for Tejas Mk-1A on May 30

VEM Technologies, a prominent player in India’s private defense manufacturing sector, is poised to deliver its inaugural Centre Fuselage (CF) assembly for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-1A to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on May 30. This milestone underscores India’s commitment to enhancing self-reliance in defense production, aligning with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Centre Fuselage serves as a crucial structural element of the Tejas Mk-1A, comprising a total of 1,595 mechanical and composite parts. Its certification by HAL’s Quality Control division and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) signifies compliance with rigorous aerospace standards, highlighting the quality and precision embedded in its production.

VEM Technologies has leveraged its state-of-the-art production capabilities, which include high-precision machinery, metallurgical processing, and integration of pneumo-hydraulic systems and electro-optics. To meet both current and future demands from the Indian Air Force, the company established a dedicated production line for the Centre Fuselage in 2021.

The LCA Tejas Mk-1A represents an upgraded iteration of India’s indigenous fighter jet, incorporating cutting-edge technologies such as an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, modern avionics, self-protection jammers, and advanced electronic warfare systems. Currently, the Mk-1A boasts 62% indigenous content by value, with projections suggesting this figure could surpass 70% in the forthcoming Tejas Mk-2 variant.

This impending handover signifies the growing role of private enterprises like VEM Technologies in fortifying India’s defense capabilities. The collaboration with HAL exemplifies a robust domestic aerospace ecosystem that is crucial for modernizing the Indian Air Force and decreasing reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly amid ongoing global supply chain challenges.

The official delivery event on May 30 is expected to be a moment of national pride, symbolizing India’s advancements in aerospace manufacturing and emphasizing the nation’s strategic focus on achieving technological self-sufficiency.
