AIR MARSHAL S PRABHAKARAN ASSUMES COMMAND OF IAF’s WAC

  • Air Marshal Sreekumar Prabhakaran assumed command of Delhi-based Western Air Command on 01 March 2022.
    •  Air Marshal S Prabhakaran succeeds Air Marshal Amit Dev.
    •  The Air Marshal is a graduate of National Defence Academy, an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Wellington and National Defence College, New Delhi.
    • About WAC:
    • The WAC is the regional command of IAF HQ in New Delhi.
    • It is the largest and most important Air Command of the IAF, comprising sixteen Air Force Bases, and is responsible for aerial defence of North India.
    • WAC’s Area of Responsibility extends from J&K to Rajasthan, also covering the states of H.P, Punjab, Haryana, New Delhi, and Western U.P.

SEA PHASE OF MILAN 22 COMMENCES 01 MAR 22

  • Sea Phase of MILAN 2022 commenced on 01 Mar 22. A total of 26 ships, 21 aircraft and one submarine are participating in the multilateral naval exercise being conducted in the Bay of Bengal. The Sea phase is scheduled till 04 Mar and includes advanced and complex exercises in all three dimensions of maritime operations.
  • The pre-sail Combined Briefing for the Sea Phase conducted prior to departure was presided by the Rear Adm Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and attended by Senior Officers, Commanding Officers and planning teams of all participating units from Friendly Foreign Countries.
  • The Sea Phase of MILAN aims to enhance interoperability and maritime cooperation and share best practices amongst the participating navies. The schedule includes Weapon firings, Seamanship evolutions, advanced anti-submarine warfare exercises, cross deck helicopter landings, simulation of complex operational scenarios and tactical manoeuvres.

India & US Hold 19th Military Cooperation Meeting

  • The 19th edition of India-US Military Cooperation Group (MCG) meeting was held in Agra, Uttar Pradesh on March 01-02, 2022. The meeting was co-chaired by Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) Air Marshal BR Krishna from the Indian side and Deputy Commander, US Indo-Pacific Command Lieutenant General Stephen D Sklenka from the US side. The discussions focussed on strengthening the ongoing defence engagements between the two sides and mulled on new initiatives under the ambit of existing cooperation mechanism.  
  • The India-US MCG is a forum established to progress defence cooperation between the countries through regular talks at the strategic and operational levels between Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff and the US Indo-Pacific Command.

Mod Accords In- principle Approval to Four Projects

  • In a major boost to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s clarion call for ‘Atmanirbharta’, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), in a landmark step, has offered four projects to the Indian Industry for design & development under Make-I category of Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020. The industry will be provided financial support for the prototype development of these projects. The list of projects which were accorded ‘Approval In-Principle (AIP)’ by the Collegiate Committee of MoD is as follows:
  • Indian Air Force: Communication Equipment with Indian Security Protocols (Routers, Switches, Encryptors, VoIP Phones and their software)
  • Indian Air Force: Airborne Electro-Optical pod with Ground-Based System
  • Indian Air Force: Airborne Stand-off Jammer
  • Indian Army: Indian Light Tank
  • This is for the first time since the launch of industry-friendly DAP-2020 that the Indian Industry has been involved in the development of big-ticket platforms such as Light tanks and Communication Equipment with Indian security protocols.
  • In addition, AIP has also been accorded to following five projects under industry-funded Make-II procedure: Indian Air Force: Full Motion Simulator for Apache Helicopter
  • Indian Air Force: Full Motion Simulator for Chinook Helicopter
  • Indian Air Force: Wearable Robotic Equipment for Aircraft Maintenance
  • Indian Army: Integrated Surveillance and Targeting System for Mechanised Forces
  • Indian Army: Autonomous Combat Vehicle
  • Projects under the ‘Make-II’ category involve prototype development of equipment/system/platform or their upgrades or their subsystems/sub-assembly/assemblies/components, primarily for import substitution/innovative solutions, for which no Government funding will be provided for prototype development purposes.

Hybrid Seminars Organised During DefExpo 2022  

  • Ministry of Defence is hosting the 12th edition of the prestigious biennial defence exhibition, DefExpo 2022, at Gandhinagar, Gujarat from March 10-14, 2022.
  • This mega defence international exhibition is focussing on land, air, naval, internal homeland security and electronic systems.
  • The DefExpo seminars will be held in a hybrid format, enabling the speakers as well as the audience to participate in various seminars virtually.
  • The seminars are themed on exports, future of Civil Aviation in India, R&D, Future of Conflicts, Aero Engines and MRO, Outreach programs by the State Governments on investment opportunities etc.
  • The NCC falls under the purview of the Ministry of Defence and is headed by a Director-General of three-star military rank.

SSB Asks Its Troops Not to Store Personal Data

  • SSB has directed its personnel not to store personal data on smartphones as it may lead to “dangerous” consequences if the device falls into wrong hands.
  • The force that guards unfenced Indian fronts with Nepal (1,751 km) and Bhutan (699 km) has said such instances have “grave national security implications and shows the organisation in poor light”.
  • It also asked the personnel to uninstall the True caller mobile phone application from their smartphones.
  • The personnel have been directed to note down the unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) code of their phones and keep it at a safe place so that unauthorized access to their device can be stopped and the phone can be blocked in case it is lost or stolen.
