Visit of Australian Army Chief to India  

  • Lt Gen Richard Maxwell Burr AO, DSC, MVO, Chief of Army Australia along with a four-member delegation is visiting India from 08 to 11 March 2022.
    • On 09 March 2022, the Australian Army Chief laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the South Block. Lt Gen Richard Burr called on the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff and other senior military officers.
    • Interaction between both the Chiefs of the Army Staff was warm and cordial. Both Chiefs exchanged views on the current global situation and the situation in Indo-Pacific in addition to discussing measures for enhancing defence cooperation between both armies.

India-Australia Relations:

  • Participation of Australia in Exercise Malabar.
    • Various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives like AUSINDEX, Mutual Logistic Support Arrangement (MLSA), and Defence Science & Technology Implementing Arrangement (DSTIA) were reviewed.
    • 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue held b/w both.
    • Australia supports India’s candidature in an expanded UN Security Council.
    • Both India and Australia are members of the Quad, Commonwealth, Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), ASEAN Regional Forum, Asia Pacific Partnership on Climate and Clean Development, and have participated in the East Asia Summits.
    • A Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement between the two countries was signed in September 2014.

Aarc Signs Mou With Claws  

  • Lt Gen Richard Burr, the Chief of the Australian Army is on a three-day visit to India from 08 March 2022.
  • On 09 March 2022, the Australian Army Chief visited the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), the Indian Army think tank, New Delhi where he interacted with the Vice Chief of Army Staff.
  • In order to establish academic cooperation and engagement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between Australian Army Research Centre (AARC) and Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) on the side-lines of the visit.

Britain Plans To Supply Ukraine With Anti-aircraft Missiles

  • Britain is planning to supply Ukraine with anti-aircraft missiles to help it defend its skies from Russian invasion, defence minister Ben Wallace said, stressing that the technology fell within the definition of defensive weapons.
  • The STARStreak system is made by Thales.
  • “In response to Ukrainian requests, the government has taken the decision to explore the donation of STARStreak high-velocity man-portable anti-air missiles. We believe that this system will remain within the definition of defensive weapons, but will allow the Ukrainian force to better defend their skies.”

NSA Calls For Strengthening Cooperation Amongst Maritime Neighbours In IOR

  • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Wednesday called for strengthening cooperation amongst maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean region to address shared security challenges, and as the first responders.
  • Doval, who arrived in the Maldives earlier in the day, made the remarks while addressing the 5th NSA-level Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) Meeting in Male.
  • The two-day conclave is being attended by National Security Advisors and Representatives from India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Mauritius, Bangladesh and Seychelles.
  • Speaking at the conclave, Maldives Defence Minister Mariya Didi highlighted the regional security challenges facing the Maldives such as narco-trafficking, human trafficking, piracy, fisheries, counterterrorism and violent extremism.
  • The region has 51 coastal and landlocked states, namely 26 Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) states five Red Sea states, four Persian Gulf states, Saudi Arabia, France, Britain, and 13 landlocked states.
  • Four critically important access waterways are the Suez Canal (Egypt), Bab el Mandeb (Djibouti-Yemen), the Strait of Hormuz (Iran Oman), and the Strait of Malacca (Indonesia-Malaysia).
  • The region contains 1/3 of the world’s population, 25% of its landmass, 40% of the world’s oil and gas reserves.
  • The Indian Ocean region transports 75% of the world’s maritime trade and 50% of daily global oil consumption.
  • India’s role as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean region (IOR).

Air Marshal B Chandra Sekhar took over as Commandant, AFA Dundigal”

  • Air Marshal B Chandra Sekhar, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) took over as “Commandant, Air Force Academy Dundigal” of Indian Air Force on Tuesday.
  • The Air Marshal hails from Telangana and underwent his schooling in Hyderabad prior to joining National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla.
  •  He is an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College Wellington, Flying Instructors’ School, College of Defence Management and NDC New Delhi, Air Marshal B Chandra Sekhar was commissioned in the IAF on Dec 21, 1984.

ANC Tested Fired Brahmos Missile

  • The ANC deployment of Western Fleet culminated with the successful test-firing of BrahMos missile from INS Chennai with pinpoint accuracy demonstrating lethal capability yet again.
  • The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. It is the world’s fastest Anti-Ship Cruise Missile currently in operation. The Land-launched and Ship-launched versions are already in service.
