NFHS-5 National Report

  • National Report of the 2nd phase of fifth round of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) was released.
  • The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) is a large-scale, multi-round survey conducted in a representative sample of households throughout India.
  • It comprises detailed information on key domains of population, health and family welfare and associated domains like characteristics of the population; fertility; family planning; infant and child mortality; maternal and child health; nutrition and anaemia; morbidity and healthcare; women’s empowerment etc.
  • Key Highlights:
  • Fertility Rates: The Total Fertility Rate (TFR), has further declined from 2.2 to 2.0 at the national level between NNFHS 4 and 5.
  • Under Marriages: According to NFHS-5, 23.3% women surveyed got married before attaining the legal age of 18 years, down from 26.8% reported in NFHS-4.
  • Domestic Violence Against Women: Domestic violence has come down marginally from 31.2% in 2015-16 to 29.3% in 2019-21.
  • Institutional Births: It increased from 79% to 89% in India.
  • Immunization Level: More than three-fourths (77%) children age 12-23 months were fully immunized, compared with 62% in NFHS-4.
  • Stunting: The level of stunting among children under five years has marginally declined from 38% to 36% in the country since the last four years.
  • Obesity: Compared with NFHS-4, the prevalence of overweight or obesity has increased in most States/UTs in NFHS-5.

International Day Of Argania

  • In 2021, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 10 May the International Day of Argania. The resolution, submitted by Morocco, was co-sponsored by 113 member states of the United Nations and adopted by consensus. The argan tree (Argania Spinosa) is a native species of the sub-Saharan region of Morocco, in the southwest of the country, which grows in arid and semiarid areas.
  • The argan tree is typically a multipurpose tree that supports income generation, increases resilience and improves climate adaptation, playing a very important role in achieving the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental – at the local level.
  • The sustainable argan production sector contributes to the economic empowerment and financial inclusion of local communities, especially women living in rural areas. Cooperatives are instrumental in promoting local job opportunities and can play an important role in contributing to food security and in eradicating poverty.

World Red Cross Day

  • World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is celebrated on 8 May each year.
  • This date is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May 1828. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.

Excavations At Rakhigarhi

  • Rakhigarhi in Hisar district of Haryana has been a very important site of Harappan civilization. It is one of the largest settlement of Harappan civilization.
  • Joint Director General of Archaeological Survey of India Dr Sanjay Kumar Manjul said, there are seven mounds at the site and excavation is underway at Mound 1, Mound 3 and Mound 7.
  • He said, the site is too vast and it is spread over more than three thousand five hundred hectares.
  • The cultural span of the Harappan Civilization can be broadly subdivided into three periods, early 3300 BC to 2600 BC, mature 2600 BC to 1900 BC and late 1900 BC to 1700 BC.
  • Dr Manjul said different mounds have different depositions that shows cultural continuity. Rakhigarhi site is one of the five iconic sites declared by the Centre.

Jan Suraksha Schemes Complete 7 Years

  • Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) today complete seven years of providing social security net. The schemes were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9th May 2015 in Kolkata, West Bengal. These schemes have been successful in providing affordable insurance and security to people.
  • three social security schemes are dedicated to the welfare of the citizens, recognizing the need for securing human life from unforeseen risks or losses and financial uncertainties. In order to ensure that the people from the unorganized section of the country are financially secure, the Government launched two insurance schemes – Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and introduced Atal Pension Yojana to cover the exigencies in the old age.
  • While the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana provide access to low-cost life or accidental insurance cover to the people, the Atal Pension Yojana provides an opportunity for saving in the present to get a regular pension in old age. As of 27th of last month, the cumulative enrolments under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana have been more than 12.76 crore and an amount of 11 thousand 522 crore has been paid for over 5 lakh 76 thousand claims.
  • The cumulative enrolments under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana have been more than 28.37 crore and an amount of one thousand 930 crore rupees has been paid for over 97 thousand claims. More than 4 crore individuals have subscribed to Atal Pension Yojana.
  • On completion of 7 years of Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the three Jan Suraksha schemes have brought insurance and pension within the reach of the common man. She said, the number of people enrolled and benefitted from the schemes over the last seven years is a testimony to the success of the schemes.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Gopal Krishna Gokhale ( 9 May 1866 – 19 February 1915) Was An Indian ‘Moderate’ Political Leader And A Social Reformer During The Indian Independence Movement.
  • Gokhale Was A Senior Leader Of The Indian National Congress And The Founder Of The Servants Of India Society.
  • Through The Society As Well As The Congress And Other Legislative Bodies He Served In, Gokhale Campaigned For Indian Self-rule And For Social Reforms.

New Supreme Court Judges Appointed

  • Chief Justice of India Justice N V Ramana administered the oath of office to Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Jamshed B Pardiwala at a function in the Supreme Court.
  • Before their appointment in the Apex Court, Justice Dhulia was Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and Justice Pardiwala was Judge in the Gujarat High Court.
  • With the appointment of Justice Dhulia and Justice Pardiwala, the top court has now full strength of 34 judges.

Carlos Alcaraz Wins Madrid Open

  • Rising Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz clinched the Madrid Open title, beating defending champion Alexander Zverev.
  • The Spaniard brushed aside the German second seed 6-3, 6-1 in 62 minutes in the men’s singles final. The victory took the 19-year-old’s winning streak to 10 matches. Alcaraz beat Rafael Nadal and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic on his way to the final, the first such instance in a clay-court tournament. Alcaraz is set to rise to sixth in the world today before the French Open later in May. It is his second master’s 1000 crown after Miami last month and his fourth title of the year.

Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa Resigns

  • Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned today from his post after anti-government protests across the island nation.
  • Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana has also handed over his resignation letter to the President.
  • These resignations came after violent clashes erupted in Colombo over the economic crisis in the country.
  • Meanwhile, a curfew has been imposed across the country after supporters of the country’s ruling party stormed a major protest site in Colombo, attacking anti-government demonstrators and clashing with Police who used tear gas and water cannons to drive them back.
  • On Friday, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had declared a State of Emergency in the country. It was the second time that emergency was declared in Sri Lanka in just over a month.
