Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ successfully flight-tested

  • Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’, launched from an indigenously developed helicopter, was successfully flight-tested at high-altitude ranges on April 11, 2022.
  • The flight test was jointly conducted by the teams of scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Army, and Indian Air Force, as part of the user validation trials.
  • The flight trials were conducted from an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and the missile was fired successfully engaging a simulated tank target. The missile is guided by an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) operating in the Lock on Before Launch mode. It is one of the most advanced Anti-Tank weapons in the world.
  • In continuation to validation trials conducted at Pokhran, proof of efficacy at high altitudes paves the way for its integration on ALH. The trials were witnessed by senior Army commanders and senior scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

HAL Signs Contract with Nigerian Army for Phase II Training On Chetak Helicopter

  • The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited on Monday said it has signed a contract with the Nigerian Army for imparting Phase-II flying training on Chetak Helicopter for six officers of Nigerian Army Aviation.
  • This marks the continuation of the contract signed in April 2021 for imparting Phase-I flying training to six Nigerian Army Aviation officers, which was successfully executed in December 2021.
  • The Phase-II flying training on Chetak Helicopter is scheduled to commence on Monday and is planned to be completed by December 2022. As part of the training, 70 hours of flying training would be imparted for each Nigerian Army Aviation Officer.

Rajnath Singh exhorts US aerospace, defence majors to join ‘Make in India’, ‘Make for World’ initiatives   

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with US aerospace and defence majors Boeing and Raytheon and exhorted them to take advantage of the policy initiatives in India aimed at ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for World’.
    • Ahead of the 2+2 dialogue, Blinken had last week called Jaishankar to review regional and global priorities, including the situation in Ukraine. The last 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue b/w the two countries was held in October 2020 in New Delhi.
    • India and the United States held a bilateral 2+2 inter-sessional meeting in September last year in Washington and exchanged assessments on developments in South Asia, the Indo-Pacific region and the Western Indian Ocean.

IAF Inquiry Blames More Than One Official for Brahmos Accidental Firing

  • In less than a month, the IAF has completed its inquiry into the BrahMos accidental firing case and blamed more than one official from the missile squadron for the incident for which there would be “swift and severe punishment”.
  • The inquiry into the March 9 incident was done by Assistant Chief of Air Staff Operations (Offensive) Air Vice Marshal RK Sinha where during routine maintenance and inspection, a BrahMos missile got fired accidentally and landed up in the Mian Channu area of Pakistan.
  • “More than one official has been found blameworthy for the incident which was totally avoidable. The guilty officials would be given a swift and severe punishment,” government.
  • The court of inquiry also found a clear violation of standard operating procedures by the officials concerned.

Chinook Undertook the Longest Non-stop Helicopter Sortie in India

  • An Indian Air Force (IAF) Chinook heavy-lift chopper has created a flying record by completing a non-stop helicopter sortie in India, flying from Chandigarh to Jorhat (Assam).
  • “The 1910-kilometer route was completed in 7 hours 30 minutes and made possible by the capabilities of Chinook along with operational planning and execution of the IAF,” a spokesperson for Western Air Command of IAF said.
  • The Chinook is a multi-role, vertical-lift platform, used for transporting men and material. It also plays an important role in humanitarian and disaster relief operations. “Rapid mobility will allow the IAF to employ this asset optimally as required,”
