August 7 Every Year Decided as National Javelin Day

  • The Athletics Federation of India has announced that August 7 each year would be celebrated as National Javelin Throw Day with competitions in all States and Union Territories to commemorate Neeraj Chopra’s feat of winning the country’s first athletics gold medal in the Olympic Games in Tokyo with a throw of 87.58m
  • The 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra, India’s first Olympic medalist in track and field sport, said he was humbled by the announcement.

PM Addresses CII Annual Meeting 2021

  • Addressing the Conference, he said that the major responsibility for the success of the self-reliant India campaign lies on Indian industries.
  • India, which was apprehensive of foreign investment, is welcoming investments of all types today and countrymen is with the products made in India.

Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA)

  • CEC inaugurates 11th Annual Meeting of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) for 2021.
  • ECI hands over Chair FEMBoSA role to Election Commission of Bhutan for 2021-22.
  • Delegations from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka participated in the day-long meeting.
  • ECI & India International Institute of Democracy & Election Management (IIIDEM) to continue to organize capacity building courses for FEMBoSA members.
  • Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) was established at the 3rd Conference of Heads of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) of SAARC Countries in 2012.
  • The forum aims to increase cooperation in respect to the common interests of the SAARC’s EMBs.
  • The Forum has eight Member Election Management Bodies from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

UN’s 6th Assessment report: A Code-Red Warning

  • The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has just published the first part of the much-awaited sixth assessment report (AR6).
  • Prior to the latest report, the fifth assessment report (AR5) was published in 2013-14.
  • The key findings and conclusion of the coveted report however show trends of not merely a grim future, but a ‘code red’ warning for humanity with global temperatures likely to rise 1.5°C in 20 years.
  • It was unanimously concluded that humans are primarily responsible for the “unequivocal” warming of the planet and for causing “widespread & rapid” changes to Earth’s oceans, ice, and land surface.
  • The report further warned that the present state of changes in the climate system is “unprecedented” and “irreversible” and thus cannot be ruled out.

National Mission on Edible Oil-Oil Palm

  • Prime Minister has announced a new national initiative on palm oil production to help increase farm incomes.
  • The scheme, called National Edible Oil Mission-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), for self-reliance in edible oil involves investment of over Rs. 11,000 crores (over a five-year period).
  • The special emphasis of the scheme will be in India’s north-eastern states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to the conducive weather conditions in the regions.
  • Under the scheme, oil palm farmers will be provided financial assistance and will get remuneration under a price and viability formula.
  • To harness domestic edible oil prices that are dictated by expensive palm oil imports.
  • To raise the domestic production of palm oil by three times to 11 lakh MT by 2025-26.
  • This will involve raising the area under oil palm cultivation to 10 lakh hectares by 2025-26 and 16.7 lakh hectares by 2029-30.

The General Insurance Business (Nationalization) Amendment Bill, 2021 Passed

  • The bill seeks to amend General Insurance Business (Nationalization) Act, 1972 to “provide for greater private participation in the public sector insurance companies”.
  • It seeks to enhance insurance penetration and social protection and “better secure the interests of policyholders and contribute to faster growth of the economy”.
  • The bill seeks to remove provision of the Act to remove the requirement that the Central Government holds not less than 51 per cent of the equity capital in a specified insurer.
  • The government hopes to achieve its planned divestment target of ₹1.75 lakh crore for 2021-22 but the target has hit hurdles posed by the pandemic.
