Accidental Firing of Missile in Pak by India

  • On 9 March 2022, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile.
    • The Government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry.
    • It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.

MOD Identifies 18 Major Platforms For Design And Development

  • In a significant boost to Prime Minister vision on ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’, and in sync with the announcement in the Union Budget 2022-23 that allocated 25% of Defence R & D Budget for industry led R & D, 18 major platforms have been identified by the MoD for industry led Design & Development under various routes.

INS Chennai And INS Teg Visit Colombo

  • Ships of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet, INS Chennai, and INS Teg, made a port call at Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 10 March 22 for a two-day visit. They were received by the Officer of the Guard (OOG) and the Sri Lanka Navy band.
  • Upon arrival, Rear Admiral Sameer Saxena, NM, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet visited the IPKF memorial to pay homage to the soldiers that sacrificed their lives for peace in the region. The memorial is also testimony to the inextricable ties between the people of India and Sri Lanka.
  • Many working level interactions are scheduled between naval personnel of the two countries, followed by familiarisation tour of Galle and Kandy for IN personnel, visits of Sri Lanka Navy personnel, school children & local visitors on board Indian warships.
  • In addition, an interaction between operational teams of the two navies is also scheduled to finalise the schedule of the Maritime Partnership Exercise on 12 Mar 22.

Annual Navy Education Society Conference

  • The Annual Navy Education Society Conference was conducted through virtual mode on 09 & 10 Mar 22. Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, Controller Personnel Services, IHQ MoD & Chairman NES chaired the meeting through Video Conferencing Facility situated at Navy Children School Delhi.
  • The conference was attended by Cmde MK Singh, Vice Chairman NES and Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, Directors, Principals, and Headmistresses of all 13 Navy Children Schools (NCSs). 
  • He stressed upon all schools for continued efforts in the field of innovative teaching, infrastructure development, use of green energy solutions and alumni connect while keeping an eye on the expansion plans and vision of the schools.

SLINEX 22 Culminates

  • The Ninth Edition of India – Sri Lanka Bilateral Maritime Exercise SLINEX (Sri Lanka–India Naval Exercise) culminated at Visakhapatnam on 10 Mar 2022. The exercise was conducted in two phases; the Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam on 07-08 Mar 22 followed by the Sea Phase on 09-10 Mar 22 in the Bay of Bengal.

Pakistan Air Force Inducts New Batch of Chinese Fighter Jets

  • Pakistan’s air force officially inducted its first batch of Chinese-built J-10C fighter jets on Friday, holding a ceremony with officials from both sides in Islamabad.
  • Several of the jets flew overhead as PM Imran Khan welcomed the purchase, made for an undisclosed amount. Pakistan hasn’t said how many aircraft were bought in the deal, though authorities had earlier spoken of up to 25 jets. China is a longtime ally of Pakistan and has sold its military aircraft before.

Army Chopper Crash in North Kashmir

  • An Army Cheetah helicopter on its way to pick up sick BSF personnel crashed near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Gurez Sector on Friday, resulting in the killing of its pilot and injuries to the co-pilot.
  • Maj Sankalp Yadav, of Army Aviation Squadron, lost his life in the line of duty, to injuries suffered in the Cheetah Helicopter crash at Gurez, J&K earlier today – 11 March 2022.
  • The helicopter was about to land but “drifted away” because of the weather conditions, an official said.

Posting Women Officers Onboard Warships

  • The Indian Navy has recently started posting women officers onboard warships and more avenues are being opened for them in the force.
  • Lieutenant Commander Priyanka Chaudhary is serving as the Logistics Officer on India’s only aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
  • Providing more opportunities to women officers, Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar in December 2021 said 28 women officers have been deployed on different warships in different roles.
