- During the two-day visit, the Brazilian delegation held extensive discussions with the Indian Navy counterparts, focusing on the maintenance of submarines. As part of the visit, the delegation also visited Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Ltd. & a Kalvari (Scorpene) class submarine of the Indian Navy.
- The Brazilian Navy also operates 4 Scorpene-class submarines and is exploring options for collaboration towards the maintenance of the diesel-electric attack submarines.
Taliban To Sign Security Agreement With Qatar
- After expressing their opposition to any kind of foreign support in terms of providing security, the Taliban is now willing to sign a security agreement with Qatar.
- “Qatar has offered an agreement based on consultation with Western countries to encourage the young Afghan leaders to bring reforms, the reforms which the international community wants“.
- “The security pact regarding incentivizing the Air Force and National Defense Forces of Afghanistan with Qatar will allow the people of Afghanistan and the new rulers to stand against the ominous plans of Pakistan and Iran“.
- The refusal to accept the status of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan (Durand Line) by the Taliban regime has clearly shown the cracks in their relationship.
- Pakistan has committed a strategic blunder in thinking that the Taliban, which the country helped in fighting a US-backed Afghanistan for over two decades, will fulfil Islamabad’s wishes.
- However, the Taliban have till now shown no signs of acceding to the wishes, rather, on several occasions, rejected Pakistan’s demands including the one to recognize the Durand Line.
- Durand Line is not the only bone of contention between the countries as both the nations do not see eye to eye on a range of issues like expelling Baloch insurgents, dismantling, degrading and destroying Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and allowing education for girls and giving women rights
India Supports UNSC Resolutions Giving Extension For Syria Cross-border Aid
- India on Tuesday welcomed the adoption of the resolution by the UNSC on extending authorization of humanitarian assistance to Syria through the Bab-Al Hawa crossing.
- India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador R. Ravindra said, “Today’s adoption will reassure nearly 4 million people in the northwest of Syria, 2.7 million of whom are IDPs, many of whom are women and children.’
- “At the same time, we should not lose sight of the fact that more than 14.5 million people across Syria need humanitarian assistance in one form or the other, with essential food items and fuel in short supply. Food insecurity has reached historic highs and an estimated 60 percent of the population is food insecure, as per the UN“.
- Notably, the current UN Security Council’s exceptional authorization for humanitarian aid delivery through the last remaining border crossing into northwest Syria expires on July 10.
- As the country faces its worst economic and humanitarian crisis since the start of the conflict, the international community must safeguard existing, life-saving cross-border assistance and increase their funding pledges to support this aid, read the UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner in its press release in May.
- In opposition-held northwest Syria, humanitarian conditions are deteriorating due to the ongoing hostilities and a deepening economic crisis. Some 4.1 million people there rely on aid to meet their basic needs, and 80 per cent of them are women and children.
- Through the cross-border operations authorized by the Security Council, aid reaches around 2.4 million of them every month. This lifeline is vital to the population in northwest Syria. While some aid is delivered cross-line from within Syria, these deliveries contain much smaller, insufficient quantities and are exposed to attacks along a dangerous delivery route that crosses active front lines.
- The UN Syria Commission also pointed to the alarming trajectory of consistent narrowing of the cross-border humanitarian aid delivery. The Security Council first adopted a resolution in 2014, authorizing the delivery of assistance into Northern Syria through four border crossings, even without the Government of Syria’s consent. Since 2020, three crossings have been excluded from the scope of the resolution, leaving Bab al-Hawa as the only remaining authorized border crossing.
Indian Army Desirous of Missile-armed Wheeled AFVs
- The Indian Army issued a tender notification for a wheeled armoured fighting vehicle that will be armed with ATGM on 5 July. With an acceptance of necessity document already having been issued, responses indicating interest from domestic industry are due by 2 August.
- Solutions must be domestically designed and built, with at least 50% local content. Field evaluation trials are to occur within three years of the actual RfP issuance.
- A month earlier, on 6 June, the Defence Acquisition Council had approved the procurement of such an ATGM-armed AFV, along with other equipment such as rough-terrain forklifts, armoured vehicle-launched bridges and weapon locating radars. The most obvious candidate for the ATGM platform is Tata Motors’ 8×8 WhAP (Wheeled Armoured Platform), also known as the Kestrel.
- At Chennai Defence Expo 2021, Tata exhibited a WhAP fitted with a Kongsberg RWS mounted atop its regular turret, but the army likely needs something more like the Nag Missile Carrier (NAMICA).
- The NAMICA has been integrated onto a BMP-2 chassis, but this would be the first time for it to be fitted onto a wheeled platform. The NAMICA features six ready-to-fire Nag missiles.
- No mention has been made of the number of vehicles the Indian Army needs, but Indian media are speculating it could be 200 units. They would likely be deployed along the mountainous border with China.
- Earlier this year, the Indian Army inducted a batch of 8×8 WhAPs, which the military is calling the Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV). Tata Advanced Systems Limited will provide ongoing logistics and maintenance support for these vehicles.
- In other missile news, the Indian MoD announced that a domestically developed ATGM was successfully fired ‘with textbook precision’ from the 120mm main gun of an Arjun MBT on 28 June.

- LCA-Division (Production line) already has switched to manufacturing 18 LCA-Tejas Trainer aircraft that were ordered by the IAF. HAL plans to deliver four Trainer aircraft this year and the rest by 2024.
- The second Tejas Mk1A flying Test Bed with all equipment on board will make its first flight sometime in 2023 to escalate the program so that delivery of three Tejas MkA commences from 2024 onwards and the entire order of 73 jets is completed by 2028-29.
