Gita Mahotsav 2021

  • The conversations between Shri Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra gave birth to the Bhagavad Gita.
  • This sacred book, revered by the Hindus, came into existence on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi Tithi of Margashirsha (Agrahayana).
  • And with as many as 700 verses, this ancient script is part of the great Indian Epic Mahabharata’s Bhishma Parva. Interestingly, devotees observe the 5158th anniversary of the holy book on 14th Dec 2021.

Make in India programme: A Look back into Journey

  • ‘Make in India’ is an initiative launched on 25th September 2014, a major national programme of the Government of India designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, build best in class infrastructure, and make India a hub for manufacturing, design, and innovation. This was stated by Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Shri Rao Inderjit Singh in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
  • The Minister further stated that the number of companies incorporated after the announcement of ‘Make in India’ programme are as under: –
  • Development of a robust manufacturing sector continues to be a key priority of the Government. It was one of the unique ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives that promoted India’s manufacturing domain to the world. ‘Make in India’ recognizes ‘ease of doing business’ as the single most important factor to promote entrepreneurship.

Khelo India U21 Women’s Hockey League

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur will inaugurate the first edition of Khelo India U21 Women’s Hockey League at the iconic Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi on Wednesday(15th December 2021). The league will be organised from December 15thto 21st December 2021. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has designed this league to give emerging talent an additional opportunity to gain competitive exposure.
  • Organised by the Sports Authority of India in collaboration with Hockey India, the first phase of the 14-team League will get rolling with a match between Odisha Naval Tata Hockey High Performance Centre, Bhubaneswar, and Raja Karan Hockey Academy, Karnal.
  • The Indian Junior team, preparing for the FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup, will star favourites while two Sports Authority of India squads will want to steal a march on the other sides in the competition. A total of 14 teams will be vying for Honours over the course of seven days here.

SURVEY ON BEGGARS

  • As per Census 2011, there are 4,13,670 beggars and vagrants in the country.
  • A Meeting was held with some of the NGOs/Experts/States working in the field of beggary for Comprehensive rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of Begging on 14.01.2020.
  • After the discussion, Ministry had initiated pilot project on Comprehensive Rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of Begging in seven (7) cities namely Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Nagpur, and Patna. These pilots are being implemented with the support of State Governments/UTs/Local Urban Bodies and Voluntary Organizations etc., which provide comprehensive measures including survey and identification, mobilization, rehabilitation, provision of medical facilities, awareness generation, counseling, education, skill development and sustainable settlement of persons engaged in begging.
  • Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has formulated a scheme “SMILE – Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise”, which includes a sub-scheme – ‘Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of Begging’.
  • This scheme covers several comprehensive measures including welfare measures for persons who are engaged in the act of begging.
  • The focus of the scheme is extensively on rehabilitation, provision of medical facilities, counseling, basic documentation, education, skill development, economic linkages and so on.

Harnaaz Sandhu Crowned Miss Universe

  • Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu (born 3 March 2000) is an Indian model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe 2021.
  • Sandhu had been previously crowned Miss Diva Universe 2021 and is the third entrant from India to win Miss Universe.
  • Sandhu was additionally crowned as Femina Miss India Punjab in 2019 and placed as a semifinalist at Femina Miss India 2019.
  • Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000 had earlier been Crowned as Miss Universe from India.

National Energy Conservation Day

  • National Energy Conservation Day is observed on December 14, every year. The day focuses on making people aware of global warming and climate change and promotes efforts towards saving energy resources. Energy conservation is the decision and practice of using less energy.
  • Energy conservation means reducing the consumption of energy by producing or using less of it. 
  • Energy conservation is an effort made to reduce the consumption of fuel and use the least energy resources to save for the future.
  • The Government of India has set up Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) on 1st March 2002 under the provision of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
  • The BEE is a constitutional body that works under the Indian Government and helps in the development of policies and strategies to reduce the use of energy.
  • World Energy Conservation Day is also observed today. It focuses on making people aware of global warming and climate change and promoting efforts towards saving energy resources.
