National Sports Awards 2020
- Sports Ministry physically hands over trophies to the winners of National Sports Awards 2020, Union Sports Minister Graces the event and says: “All athletes should take pledge of grooming and training at least five such athletes, who can win medals for India in the future”.
- On 29th August 2020, the Sports Ministry handed over a total of 74 National Sports Awards, including 5 Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratnas and 27 Arjuna Awards. Monday’s ceremony was attended by many awardees, including Rani Rampal, Vinesh Phogat and Mariyappan Thangavelu, who received the prestigious Khel Ratna Award, and Lovlina Borgohain, Ishant Sharma, Atanu Das, Satwik Sairaj Ranki reddy, Chirag Chandrasekhar Shetty, among others who received the Arjuna Award.
‘Ganga Utsav 2021 – The River Festival’
- The 5th edition of Ganga Utsav began virtually with much fun and festivities.
- The much-awaited Ganga Utsav 2021 – The River Festival will not only celebrate the glory of river Ganga but all the rivers of the country.
- Taking inspiration from the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Nadi Utsav’ i.e., celebrating rivers, the aim is to take Ganga Utsav to all the river basins in India.
- Continuous Learning and Activity Portal (CLAP) developed by NMCG in association with Tree Craze Foundation was launched.
- This is an interactive portal that is working towards initiating conversations and action around the rivers in India. The Portal is also a platform to facilitate debates and discussions and express ideas on various issues pertaining to environment, water, rivers etc.
- Jal Shakti Minister, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also launched the ‘Ganga Atlas: River of the Past’. Ganga Atlas developed by Prof Rajiv Sinha, IIT Kanpur documents the changes in River Ganga over the past 5-6 decades in terms of channel morphology, land use & land cover, river dynamics and associated issues.
- As part of this research project funded by NMCG, IIT Kanpur has also developed a workflow that allows users to process and analyze declassified imagery of riverine environments at minimal cost and using open source software.
Bhasha Sangam
- Bhasha Sangam is an initiative of the Ministry of Education under Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat, to teach basic sentences of everyday usage in 22 Indian languages. The idea is that people should acquire basic conversational skills in an Indian language other than their mother tongue. We are aiming that at least 75 lakh people should acquire this skill during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav period.
- Initiatives launched under Bhasha Sangam today:
- An initiative for school children that is being made available on DIKSHA, ePathshala and through 22 booklets
- Bhasha Sangam Mobile App developed in collaboration with myGov, by a startup called Multibhashi
- A Mobile App based quiz with over 10,000 questions on states of India developed by Nazara Technologies through the Innovation Cell of this Ministry
States Reorganization Anniversary
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended his greetings to five states – Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh – on their respective formation day.
- Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh were formed on 1st November 1956.
- Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh and was declared an independent state by the government in 1st Nov 2000.
- Haryana was constituted in 1st Nov 1966. It was a result of the division of the former state of Punjab into two separate states—Punjabi-speaking Punjab and Hindi-speaking Haryana.
Aviation Corps of Indian Army celebrate its 36th raising day
- The Army Aviation Corps was raised on 1st November 1986 as a separate Corps, and it is one of the youngest Corps of the Army.
- Army Aviation Corps pilots are drawn from other combat arms, including artillery officers. The Indian Air Force flies attack helicopters such as the Mil Mi-25/Mi-35 and HAL Rudra, which are under the operational control of the army. Helicopters such as the HAL Chetak, HAL Cheetah and HAL Dhruv provide logistical support for the Indian Army in remote and inaccessible areas.
- The Army Aviation Corps also perform combat search and rescue (CSAR), artillery lift, combat transportation, logistics relief, military prisoner transportation and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) in wartime and during natural disasters. The director general of the Army Aviation Corps is Lt Gen A.K. Suri.
G-20 Summit adopts Rome Declaration
- We, the Leaders of the G20, met in Rome on October 30th and 31st, to address today’s most pressing global challenges and to converge upon common efforts to recover better from the COVID-19 crisis and enable sustainable and inclusive growth in our Countries and across the world.
- As the premier forum for international economic cooperation, we are committed to overcoming the global health and economic crisis stemming from the pandemic, which has affected billions of lives, dramatically hampered progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and disrupted global supply chains and international mobility.
- With this in mind, we express our profound gratitude to the health and care professionals, frontline workers, international organizations, and scientific community for their relentless efforts to cope with COVID-19.
- Underlining the crucial role of multilateralism in finding shared, effective solutions, we have agreed to further strengthen our common response to the pandemic, and pave the way for a global recovery, with particular regard to the needs of the most vulnerable.
- We have taken decisive measures to support Countries most in need to overcome the pandemic, improve their resilience, and address critical challenges such as ensuring food security and environmental sustainability. We have agreed upon a shared vision to combat climate change and taken important steps towards the achievement of gender equality.
- We have also further advanced in our common efforts to ensure that the benefits of digitalization are shared broadly, safely and contribute to reducing inequalities.
Last seven years warmest on record, says WMO report
- A provisional report released by the World Meteorological Organisation has stated that the last seven years have been the warmest on record and global sea-level rise accelerated since 2013, reaching a new high in 2021. The report has attributed the record sea-level rise to warming up and acidification of ocean waters. The provisional report titled ‘State of Global Climate-2021’, was released in Geneva yesterday. The COP-26 conference began in Glasgow, combines inputs from multiple United Nations agencies, national meteorological and hydrological services, and scientific experts.
- During COP-26, the WMO will launch the Water and Climate Coalition to coordinate water and climate action and the Systematic Observations Financing Facility to improve weather observations and forecasts which are vital to climate change adaptation.
