Indian Army, Navy & Air Force have shortage of 1.36 lakh personnel: Government

  • Amid row over Agnipath scheme for recruitment in armed forces, government today informed that three armed forces have a shortage of 1,35,784 personnel, including officers and soldiers. According to the details provided by the government, the maximum vacancies of 1,16,464 are in Indian Army followed by 13,597 in Indian Navy and 5,723 in the IAF.
  • “The average annual recruitment in Army, Navy and Air Force is 60,000, 5,332 and 5,723 respectively,” Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.
  • The shortage in the Army was 64,482 personnel on January 1, 2020.
  • He said the shortage in the Navy as against the authorized strength was 13,597 as of May 31, while that in the Indian Air Force was 5,723 as of July 1.

Indian Navy Expected To Spend 70 Pc Of Capital Budget In Domestic Procurement  

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that the Indian Navy spent over 64 percent of its capital budget on domestic procurement in the last financial year and it is expected to increase to 70 percent in the current financial year.
  • Addressing the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) seminar ‘Swavlamban’ here, Singh laid thrust on innovation, indigenisation and partnerships between the Armed Forces, Industry, research establishments and academia.
  • Indian Navy:  It is headed by the President of India as its Supreme Commander.
  • Indian Navy’s Motto is – शं नो वरूण‌: that means that the God of water, Varuna, should be auspicious unto us.
  • Some of the earliest operations of the Indian Navy include its contribution to liberating Goa from Portugal in 1961.
  • The Navy has developed as an admirable force with the making of the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine INS Arihant and several other ships.
  • Indian Navy currently has one aircraft carrier, the INS Vikramaditya which was a former Russian ship that was commissioned into service in 2013.
  • It operates three classes of submarines: Chakra (it has the nuclear-powered INS Chakra), Sindhughosh, and Shishumar.

Indian Army Chief calls on Bangladesh PM Hasina in Dhaka

  • Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande called Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday as part of his four-day visit to the country.
    • He visited Defence Service Command & Staff College, Mirpur & delivered a lecture on India’s Security Perspective to student officers & faculty of Armed Forces War Course“.
    • India and Bangladesh enjoy robust and multifaceted bilateral cooperation in diverse areas, including trade and connectivity, energy and power, water resources, border management, defence and security, culture and people-to-people links.
    • The India-Bangladesh relationship is an important element of India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy. 2021 was of special significance as both countries celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations, five decades of Bangladesh’s independence and the birth centenary of its Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Korea and Spain Defence Majors Ready To Participate In 75 (I) Submarine Project

  • India has identified MDL and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to tie up with foreign defence majors in South Korea, Spain, Germany, France, and Russia to build six air independent propulsion (AIP) diesel attack submarines for the Indian Navy at the cost of over 40,000 crore.
  • South Korean Daewoo and Spanish Navantia has shown interest in building the long endurance diesel submarine under the strategic partnership model with India. The RFP was first issued in July 2021 and extended to November 30, 2022, from June 30, 2022, deadline.
  • DRDO has also developed the AIP technology and will be retrofitted on Project 75 submarines when they come for mid-life upgrade. The first of the six indigenous Scorpene class submarine, INS Kalveri, was commissioned in the Indian Navy in 2017. Three more have been commissioned in the Indian Navy since then.

India To Make Diesel Engines For Ships

  • In an important announcement on military technology, the Ministry of Defence will manufacture diesel-powered marine engines used in ships and also design and develop a heavy-lift helicopter for the three services. Both projects will have participation of the private sector.
  • The announcements were made at a seminar organised by the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) and the Society for Indian Defence Manufacturers here. Later,, PM Narendra Modi spoke at the same seminar, titled “Swavlamban” (self-reliance), and described the goal of self-reliance in the Indian defence forces.
  • “In the past four-five years, the defence imports have come down by 21 per cent. Today, we are moving fast to be a big exporter. Last year, Rs 13,000 crore worth of defence export was made,” Modi said. This figure of 21 per cent reduction, what Modi cited, is part of the report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute in March. Comparing two five-year blocks — between 2012-16 and 2017-21 — it said Indian arms imports decreased by 21 per cent.
