International Moon Day

  • UNGA declared International Moon Day, a United Nations-designated international day to be observed annually on 20 July, in its resolution on “International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space” in 2021.
  • International Moon Day marks the anniversary of the first landing by humans on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 lunar mission (16 Jul 1969 – 20 Jul 1969).
  • The celebrations will also consider the achievements of all States in the exploration of the Moon and raise public awareness of sustainable Moon exploration and utilization.

World Chess Day

  • International Chess Day is celebrated annually on 20 July, the day the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded, in 1924.
  • The idea to celebrate this day as international chess day was proposed by UNESCO, and it has been celebrated as such since 1966 after it was established by FIDE.
  • FIDE, which has 181 chess federations as its members, organizes chess events and competitions around the world on this day.
  • As recently as 2013, international chess day was celebrated in 178 countries, according to FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
  • On 12 December 2019, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the day.

Mangal Pandey Remembered On His Birth Anniversary

  • Mangal Pandey Was An Indian Soldier Who Played A Key Part In The Events Immediately Preceding The Outbreak Of The Indian Rebellion Of 1857.
  • He Was A Sepoy (Infantryman) In The 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) Regiment Of The British East India Company.
  • In 1984, The Indian Government Issued A Postage Stamp To Remember Him. His Life And Actions Have Also Been Portrayed In Several Cinematic Productions.

Mairaj Ahmad Khan Wins Gold Medal ISSF World Cup

  • In Shooting, two-time Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan created history by becoming the first Indian shooter to win the gold medal in the men’s skeet event at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, South Korea.
  • Mairaj Ahmad Khan recorded 37 hits out of a possible 40 in the final to win gold. South Korea’s Minsu Kim struck 36 for silver while Ben Llewellin of Great Britain won bronze with 26 hits.

13th Petersburg Climate Dialogue Begins In Berlin

  • The 13th Petersburg Climate Dialogue began yesterday in Berlin. The two-day informal ministerial meet is being chaired by Germany and Egypt, hosts of this year’s annual climate meet (COP-27).
  • The informal ministerial meeting proposes to build consensus and provide political direction to resolve divergences aimed at improving the implementation of climate action, the core goal of COP-27.
  • According to media reports, during the dialogue, ministers and delegations from several countries recalled the urgency to move to the implementation of all the previous resolutions made during the last meeting in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
  • As per the previous resolution, the fight against climate change requires the preservation of the Congo Basin forests, which alone absorb 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon globally per year.
  • The Petersburg Climate Dialogue will pave the way for a successful global climate conference in Egypt in November. Since its inception in 2010, the Petersburg Dialogue has served as a forum for ministers to build political consensus that helps resolve differences on issues holding up progress in negotiations.

First 100% Landlord Major Port Of India

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port has become the first 100% Landlord Major Port of India having all berths being operated on the PPP model.
  • Expressing his views on the achievement, Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, this project will improve the utilization of cranes and berth productivity of the terminal.
  • He said the total handling of JNPT will increase to 1.8 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) from the present handling capacity of 1.5 million TEUs in 2020-21.
  • The Minister said the terminal will also be handling Ro-Ro vessels which will not only lower the logistics cost and reduce transit time but will also contribute to reducing congestion on roads and promoting towards clean environment.

NAMASTE Scheme

  • The Government has formulated a National Action Plan for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem- NAMASTE  scheme for cleaning sewers and septic tanks.
  • It aims to achieve outcomes like zero fatalities in sanitation work in India, no sanitation workers come in direct contact with human fecal matter and all Sewer and Septic tank sanitation workers have access to alternative livelihoods.
  • The Ministry has shortlisted types of machinery and core equipment required for maintenance works, and safety gear for Safai Mitras. The same is also available on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal for ease of procurement by States and Urban Local Bodies. 
  • Skill Development and training of Safai Mitras are being taken up with the support of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment through the National Safai Karamcharis Finance Development Corporation.

‘DIGI YATRA’ Project

  • The Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Civil Aviation was held in New Delhi today. The topic for discussion was ‘DIGI YATRA’. Members of Parliament, who are members of the committee, took part in the meeting and made certain valuable suggestions about the project.
  • Given the background of ‘DIGI YATRA’, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that it is a project conceived to achieve contactless, seamless processing of passengers at Airports, based on Facial Recognition Technology.
  • The project basically envisages that any traveler may pass through various checkpoints at the airport through paperless and contactless processing, using facial features to establish the identity which would be linked to the boarding pass.
  • He said that the privacy issues have been taken care of in the system. It provides for decentralized mobile wallet-based identity management platform which is cost-effective and addresses privacy and data protection issues in the implementation of Digi Yatra.
  • In first phase, Digi Yatra is proposed to be rolled out at two Airports –  Varanasi and Bengaluru – in August this year. It will be rolled out at five Airports – Pune, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad – by March next year.
