World Book And Copyright Day [UNESCO]

  • World Book Day, Also Known As World Book And Copyright Day Or International Day Of The Book, Is An Annual Event Organized By The United Nations Educational, Scientific And Cultural Organization (UNESCO) To Promote Reading, Publishing, And Copyright.
  • The First World Book Day Was Celebrated On 23 April In 1995 And Continues To Be Recognized On That Day. A Related Event In The United Kingdom And Ireland Is Observed In March.
  • On World Book And Copyright Day, UNESCO Along With The Advisory Committee From The Major Sectors Of The Book Industry, Select The World Book Capital For One Year. Each Designated World Book Capital City Carries Out A Program Of Activities To Celebrate And Promote Books And Reading.
  • World Book Day 2022 Theme Is “You Are A Reader”. The Aim Of Conducting World Book Day Is To Motivate Children Across The World, Especially Those From The Underprivileged And Marginalized Communities To Develop Reading Habits For Their Intellectual Growth And Amusement.

UN English Language Day

  • UN English Day is observed annually on 23 April. The event was established by the UN’s Department of Public Information in 2010 “to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization”.
  • For the English Language Day, April 23 was chosen because it is the date “traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare”. Other dates were selected for the celebration of the UN’s other five official languages.

UN Spanish Language Day

  • UN Spanish Language Day is observed annually on 23 April.
  • The event was established by the UN’s Department of Public Information in 2010, seeking “to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six of its official working languages throughout the organization”.
  • The day was firstly observed on 12 October to celebrate the Día de la Hispanidad in some Spanish-speaking countries for the discovery of American continent.
  • Later, the day was changed to 23 April, to pay tribute to Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, who died on 22 April 1616

World Immunization Week

  • World Immunization Week, celebrated in the last week of April, aims to highlight the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease.
  • Through its convening power, WHO works with countries across the globe to raise awareness of the value of vaccines and immunization and ensures that governments obtain the necessary guidance and technical support to implement high-quality immunization programs.
  • The ultimate goal of World Immunization Week is for more people – and their communities – to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • The 2022 theme of World Immunization Week is “Long life for all,” which acts as a reminder that vaccines have played a large role in the increased life expectancy, decreased childhood mortality, and decreased post-infection complications (which could be lifelong) from previous generations.

Day Of Multilateralism And Diplomacy For Peace

  • The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace observed globally on 24 April. ‘International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace’ was first observed by the United Nations (UN) on April 24, 2019.
  • The day aims to spread knowledge about the advantages of multilateralism and diplomacy for peace, including through educational and public awareness-raising activities.
  • The Assembly proclaimed the day while considering that preserving the values of multilateralism and international cooperation is fundamental to promote and support the three pillars of the UN – Peace and Security, Development and Human Rights.
  • The Day is a reaffirmation of the UN Charter and its principles of resolving disputes among countries through peaceful means.

World Malaria Day

  • World Malaria Day (WMD) is an international observance commemorated every year on 25 April and recognizes global efforts to control malaria. Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.
  • In 2012, malaria caused an estimated 627,000 deaths, mostly among African children.
  • Asia, Latin America, and to a lesser extent the Middle East and parts of Europe are also affected.
  • World Malaria Day sprang out of the efforts taking place across the African continent to commemorate Africa Malaria Day. WMD is one of 11 official global public health campaigns currently marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).

International Delegate’s Day

  • International Delegate’s Day is observed globally on 25 April every year.
  • This day is observed to raise awareness of the role of the representatives and delegates of the Member States to the United Nations. International Delegate’s Day marks the anniversary of the first day of the San Francisco Conference which is also known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization.
  • On 25 April 1945, delegates from 50 countries came together for the first time in San Francisco.
  • The conference happened after the devastation of the second world war. The delegates aimed to set up an organization that would restore world peace and imposes rules on the post-war world order.
  • On 2 April 2019, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 25 April as International Delegate’s Day.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

  • International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is a remembrance day, observed annually on April 26. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 8, 2016, in memory of Chernobyl disaster.
  • In its resolution, the General Assembly recognized that three decades after the disaster there remain persistent serious long-term consequences and that the affected communities and territories are experiencing continuing related needs.
  • The General Assembly invites all Member States, relevant agencies of the United Nations system, and other international organizations, as well as civil society, to observe the day.
  • The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian SSR in the Soviet Union.
  • It is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history both in cost and casualties.
  • It is one of only two nuclear energy accidents rated at seven—the maximum severity—on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the other being the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. The initial emergency response, together with later decontamination of the environment, involved more than 500,000 personnel and cost an estimated 18 billion Soviet rubles—roughly US$68 billion in 2019, adjusted for inflation.

World Intellectual Property Day

  • World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April.
  • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”.
  • 26 April was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
  • This event has been criticized by several activists and scholars as one-sided propaganda in favor of traditional copyright, ignoring alternatives related to copyleft and the free culture movement.
  • The theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2022 is ‘IP and Youth Innovating for a Better Future’. Events organized to mark the Day seek to inform about the role of intellectual property rights in encouraging innovation and creativity.

Panchayati Raj Diwas

  • The Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 which came into force with effect on 24th April 1993 has vested constitutional status on Panchayati Raj institutions. This date thus marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level. The impact of the 73rd Amendment in rural India is very visible as it has changed power equations irreversibly.
  • Accordingly, the Government of India decided in consultation with the States to celebrate the 24th of April as National Panchayati Raj Day. The commemoration is being anchored by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
  • The National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) is being celebrated on 24 April 2010.
  • The Constitution of India recognizes Panchayats as ‘Institutions of self-government.
  • There are 2.51 lakh Panchayats in our country, which include 2.39 lakh Gram Panchayats, 6904 Block Panchayats, and 589 District Panchayats. There are more than 29 lakh Panchayat representatives.
  • Under the 15th Finance Commission for the period 2021-26, Rs. 2,36,805 Crore has been recommended for rural local bodies (RLBs)/ panchayats.

New Vice-Chairman Of Niti Aayog Appointed

  • Dr. Suman K Bery has been appointed new Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog. He will take charge as Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog from the 1st of next month. In order, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions said that Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, Dr. Rajiv Kumar will be relieved from his post on the 30th of this month.
  • Dr. Suman K Bery had earlier served as Director-General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) in New Delhi. NCAER is one of the country’s leading independent non-profit policy research institutions.
  • He also served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, National Statistical Commission, and Reserve Bank of India’s Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy.
