LAUNCH OF ‘NIRDESHAK’ (YARD 3026) SECOND VESSEL OF SURVEY VESSEL (LARGE) PROJECT

  • Nirdeshak, the 2nd of the four Survey Vessels projects being built by GRSE in collaboration with L&T shipbuilding for Indian Navy was launched on 26 May 22 at Kattupalli, Chennai. She made her first contact with water of the Bay of Bengal at 1038 hrs at the Launch Ceremony graced by the Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, ENC.
  • The contract for building four SVL ships was signed b/w MoD and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata on 30 Oct 18. The first of class ship ‘Sandhayak’ was launched on 05 Dec 21 at GRSE, Kolkata.
  • GRSE has made substantial progress and aims to deliver Sandhayak, the first ship of SVL by Jan 2023. The delivery of the second ship Nirdeshak is likely by Apr 2023. The Survey Vessels Large will have over 80% indigenous content by cost.
  • The SVL ships will replace the existing Sandhayak Class survey ships with new generation hydrographic equipment to collect oceanographic data. The Survey Vessel (Large) ships have a deep displacement of about 3400 tons and a complement of 235 personnel. The ship is designed to operate at cruise speed of 14 knots and maximum speed of 18 knots. Bow & Stern Thrusters have been catered for better manoeuvring at low speeds required during shallow water survey operations. The hull of these ships is made from indigenously developed DMR 249-A steel manufactured by Steel Authority of India Limited.
  • With a capability to carry four Survey Motorboats and an integral helicopter, the primary role of the ships would be to undertake full scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of Ports and navigational channels. The ships would also be deployed for collecting oceanographic and geophysical data for defence as well as civil applications. In their secondary role, the ships are capable of providing limited defence, besides serving as Hospital ships during emergencies.

Indian Navy Successfully Tests Surface To Air Missile System From Warship

  • The Indian Navy successfully tested its ship-based surface to air missile system by taking down a low flying target. The test was carried out from a stealth frigate deployed on the western seaboard by the force.

UN Security Council Renews Sanctions Against South Sudan

  • The UN Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution to renew for a year, till May 31, 2023, an arms embargo against South Sudan as well as targeted sanctions of travel ban and asset freeze against individuals and entities.
    • Resolution 2633, which was adopted with 10 votes in favor and five abstentions, also extends the mandate of the Panel of Experts, which assists the work of the South Sudan Sanctions Committee, till July 1, 2023.
    • China, Gabon, India, Kenya, and Russia abstained.
    • The resolution decides that the arms embargo shall not apply to the supply, sale or transfer of non-lethal military equipment, solely in support of the implementation of the terms of the peace agreement, as notified in advance to the Sanctions Committee.
    • The resolution reiterates the Security Council’s readiness to review arms embargo measures, through modification, suspension, or progressive lifting of these measures, in the light of progress achieved on the key benchmarks as set out in last year’s Resolution 2577, and encourages the South Sudan authorities to achieve further progress in this regard.

Rajnath Singh Arrives In Karwar During Two-day Visit To Karnataka

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday arrived in Karwar of Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on a two-day visit.
  • Rajnath Singh is scheduled to dive deep underwater in a submarine on Friday. Singh, who is at Karwar in Karnataka on a visit, will take a sortie in the indigenously made Navy’s Kalvari class submarine.
  • With the underwater sortie, Singh will have witnessed all three dimensions of the Navy’s operational capabilities — on surface, aerial and underwater.
  • A naval base at Karwar, Karnataka, will be home to Indian aircraft carriers, 30 warships and submarines, making it the largest naval base in Asia by 2025.
  • Under Project Seabird, the base will be developed over 11,000 acres with an aim to provide fleet support and maintenance to warships.
  • Karwar is the home base of the only aircraft carrier INS and is being visited by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday and Friday as part of a review. This is the second time the Defence Minister is reviewing the progress of the project.
  • The upcoming carrier INS Vikrant will also be based at Karwar. The Naval Air Station being constructed has factored the state government’s plan of expansion of runway, which will allow civil flight operations. This will give a boost to the economy of the region. The expanded runway will allow operations of maritime planes of the Navy and also fighter jets.

Amid CDS appointment process, Govt seeks list of top serving, retired defence officers

  • At a time when the process to appoint the new Chief of Defence Staff is on, the government has sought names of senior serving and retired officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force.
  • The Defence Ministry has sought the names of the top five serving officers including the serving chiefs from the three forces along with the names of retired chiefs and commander-in-chief rank officers.

  • For the retired officers, the service headquarters have been asked to provide the names of only those officers who have retired after January, 2020.
  • The appointment of the CDS by the Narendra Modi government within six months of coming back to power in 2019 has been hailed as one of the biggest reforms in the higher military structure of the country.
  • The CDS was appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs which functions at present under an Additional Secretary-rank Lieutenant General.
  • The CDS is also the head of the Integrated Defence Staff presently headed by a three-star officer from the Indian Air Force.
