First Sea Sortie of Fifth Scorpene Submarine ‘Vagir’

  • The fifth submarine of Project 75, Yard 11879, Indian Navy’s Kalvari class commenced her sea trials on 01 Feb 22. The submarine was launched in Nov 2020 from the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The submarine would be named Vagir, after commissioning.
  • MDL has ‘Delivered’ two submarines of the Project – 75 in the year 2021 and the commencement of sea trials of the fifth submarine is a significant milestone.
  • The submarine will now undergo intense trials of all its systems at sea, including propulsion systems, weapons, and sensors. The submarine is scheduled for delivery to the Indian Navy in the year 2022 after the completion of these trials.
  • Project 75 India:
  • This project envisages indigenous construction of submarines equipped with the state-of-the-art Air Independent Propulsion system at an estimated cost of Rs. 43,000 crores.
  • Project 75 (I), approved in 2007, is part of the Indian Navy’s 30-year Plan for indigenous submarine construction.
  • P75I succeeded the P75 under which six diesel-electric attack submarines of the Kalvari class, based on the Scorpene-class, were being built at MDL (Mazagon Dock Limited) – the third submarine, INS Karanj, was commissioned in March 2021.
  • Of the total 24 submarines to be built in India, six will be nuclear-powered.

Chief of Naval Staff Reviews PFR & MILAN Preparations

  • Admiral R Hari Kumar arrived at Visakhapatnam on a two-day maiden visit to the Eastern Naval Command.
  • Admiral was apprised about the preparatory activities for President’s Fleet Review & Multinational Naval Exercise, MILAN, which are scheduled at Visakhapatnam later this month.
  • About the Exercise Milan 2022:
  • It is a biennial, multilateral naval exercise that started in 1995.
  • The areas of cooperation of the exercise includes capacity building, marine domain awareness, training, hydrography, technical assistance, and operational exercises.

India-EU Calls for Resolution of Indo-Pacific Disputes

  • Amid China’s aggression in the South China Sea the EU has joined hands to call a free, open, inclusive & rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • They have called for a peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
  • South China Sea Dispute:
  • China lays claim to nearly all of the South China Sea, including the Paracel Islands.
  • However, Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia & Vietnam also claim parts of the region, believed to hold valuable oil and gas deposits.

Union Home Ministry Restructures Intelligence Bureau Cadre

  • The Union Home Ministry has approved the restructuring of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in a bid to increase promotions in the organisation, and expenditure on this account.
  • After the restructuring, the strength of the IB’s executive cadre remains the same at 20,054.

  • The IB is India’s domestic internal security and counter-intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Army Chief Discusses Bilateral Defence Cooperation with Australia

  • General MM Naravane held a telephonic conversation with Lieutenant General Rick Burr, Chief of the Australian Army where they discussed issues of bilateral defence cooperation.
  • Both countries will share their cooperation in IOR & Indo- Pacific region.

  • In June 2020, Australia and India decided to upgrade their secretaries 2+2 dialogue (Defence and Foreign Affairs) to the Ministerial level.

ALH Mk-III Helicopters Inducted Into ICG

  • HAL made 3 Advanced Light Helicopters ALH Mk-III, are part of ALH Mk-III programme, will be positioned in Bhubaneswar, Porbandar, Chennai, and Kochi.
  • Features: Surveillance Radar, Electro Optic Pod, Medical Intensive Care Unit, High Intensity Search Light, SAR Homer, Loud Hailer, Machine Gun and can perform other key roles.

Brahmos, Uran Missiles Successfully Test Fired from the Andaman Islands

  • India conducted two successful anti-ship missile tests from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The latest test-fire comes just a week after the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was fired off the coast of Odisha in Balasore on January 20.
  • The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile can cover a range of 290 km, reaching the Mach 2.8 to 3 Mach speed.
  • Meanwhile, the BrahMos – II Hypersonic cruise missile can be deployed to hit the target within a range of 450 – 600 km in a Mach 7 velocity.
  • Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC):
  • It is the first and only Tri-Service theatre command of the Indian Armed Forces, based at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India.
  • It was created in 2001 to safeguard India’s strategic interests in Southeast Asia and the Strait of Malacca.
