MOU For IAF Heritage Centre At Chandigarh

  • Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT of Chandigarh, and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff witnessed the ceremony for the signing of the MoU b/w UT of Chandigarh and IAF for setting up the IAF Heritage Centre at Chandigarh.
  • This Heritage Centre will have artefacts, simulator and interactive boards to highlight various facets of IAF. It will also showcase the vital role played by the Service in various wars and assistance rendered for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
  • This joint project of Administration of UT Chandigarh and IAF is planned to be completed by October 2022.

NCC’s Puneet Sagar Campaign To Culminate On June 5, 2022

  • NCC has launched the latest phase of its nationwide flagship campaign ‘Puneet Sagar Abhiyan’ on 30 May 2022 and it will continue till 5th June 2022, the World Environment Day.
  • About 74,000 cadets from 10 States and 4 Union Territories will participate in the campaign during this phase. The NCC cadets shall also be joined in by NCC Alumni, locals and tourists in several places across the country.
  • Puneet Sagar Abhiyan was launched by NCC to clean Sea Shores/Beaches and other water bodies including rivers & lakes, of plastic & other waste and increase awareness amongst the local population about the importance of keeping the beaches and river fronts clean.
  • The purpose of the Abhiyan is to educate locals and sensitise them about ‘Swachh Bharat’.
  • The theme of World Environment Day 2022 is Only One Earth, focusing on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.

Transfer Of IAF Land To AAI For RCS UDAN/Expansion Of Airfield

  • In line with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister of “Ude Desh ka Aam Nagarik” (UDAN) and to facilitate Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), Indian Air Force has facilitated Working Permission and handing over of Defence Land by Ministry of Defence to Airport Authority of India (AAI) at seven locations, viz, Bagdogra, Darbhanga, Adampur, Utarlai, Sarsawa, Kanpur and Gorakhpur. AAI would now be utilising the existing IAF airfields to operate civil flights under the RCS UDAN scheme. Approximately 40 acres of land is being handed over for development of civil terminals and necessary airfield infrastructure for commencing RCS flights.  
    • Providing air connectivity at these locations will boost the economy and develop the areas. Moreover, IAF is also in the process of handing over Defence land for expansion of civil airports at six locations, over and above those covered under RCS, viz., Srinagar, Thanjavur, Chandigarh, Leh, Pune and Agra. This will facilitate expansion of the existing terminals and facilities to accommodate enhanced number of passengers and cargo infrastructure.
    • Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) was launched as a Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 2016.
  • Objectives:To develop the regional aviation market.To provide affordable, economically viable and profitable air travel on regional routes to the common man even in small towns.

Features:

  • The scheme envisages providing connectivity to un-served and underserved airports of the country through the revival of existing airstrips and airports. The scheme is operational for a period of 10 years.

    • Under-served airports are those which do not have more than one flight a day, while unserved airports are those where there are no operations.
    • Financial incentives from the Centre, state governments and airport operators are extended to selected airlines to encourage operations from unserved and under-served airports and keep airfares affordable.

China Begins Building Most-advanced Large Unmanned Ship; To Launch 3rd Aircraft Carrier Soon

  • China has started building the country’s most-advanced large unmanned ship even as it geared up to launch its third aircraft carrier which was delayed by the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai.
  • Led by the Research Institute of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), a ceremony was held to celebrate the start of the large unmanned ship project.
  • Featuring a high-speed hydrofoil trimaran design, the drone ship is characterised by its high speed, long endurance and fully domestically-developed propulsion system.
  • With the resumption of work at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, the third aircraft carrier could be launched soon.
  • In April, China’s indigenously built second aircraft carrier “Shandong“, was launched 2019.
  • China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, a refit of the Soviet-era ship which was commissioned in 2012.

Jaishankar Discusses Political, Economic, Defence Cooperation With Slovak PM    

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar who is on an official visit to Slovakia met the country’s Prime Minister Eduard Heger and discussed the expansion of political, economic, and defence cooperation between the two countries.
  • Jaishankar is on a two-nation European visit – Slovakia and the Czech Republic from June 2 to 6 to impart further momentum to bilateral relations with the two Central European countries.

  • The EU is India’s 3rd largest trading partner, accounting for €62.8 billion worth of trade in goods in 2020, or 1% of total Indian trade, after China (12%) and the US (11.7%)

8th Indian Navy – Royal Malaysian Navy Staff Talks

  • Delegations led by RAdm Khir Junaidi bin Idris, ACoS (Ops & Strategy) RMN & RAdm J Singh, ACNS (FCI), IN discussed various issues incl increasing cooperation & enhancing interoperability b/n the two navies.
  • India-Malaysia Relation – India established diplomatic relations with Malaysia in 1957.
  • Economic Relation: India and Malaysia have signed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). CECA is a kind of FTA.
  • India has also signed the FTA in services and investments with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
  • Defence & Security Cooperation: Joint military exercises “Harimau Shakti” are held annually between the two countries.

Northern Command Strategic Conclave

  • Northern Command Strategic Conclave concluded with an emphasis on a Whole of Nation approach to countering current & future threats. Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi Army Cdr NC expressed gratitude to the eminent speakers for their valuable recommendations.
  • The Army Commander emphasized that ‘Gray Zone Warfare’ is an ongoing phenomenon for Northern Command, he stressed that there is a need to take a relook at the technologically enabled ‘Human Resource Management’ to meet these future challenges.
  • Army CdrNC indicated to the participants that the future holds unique challenges for all of us & strategic calculation, cooperation & understanding among all stakeholders should be the mantra to secure internal calm & external peace.
  • Northern Command- The Northern Command is a Command of the Indian Army. It was originally formed as the Northern Army of the British Indian Army in 1908. It was scrapped upon India’s independence in 1947 and later re-raised in 1972. Currently, the XIV Corps, XV Corps and XVI Corps control its operational units.
