LIC IPO Opens For Public Subscription
- The Initial Public Offering, IPO of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has opened for public subscription from today. It will remain open for subscription till 9th of May. LIC IPO is the biggest public offering in the country. the allotment of shares to the Demat account of bidders will take place by 16th May and the IPO will list for trading on 17th May.
- The country’s largest life insurer, LIC opens its IPO today. An initial public offering, IPO refers to the process of offering shares of a private corporation to the public in a new stock issuance.
- LIC has fixed the price band of 902 to 949 rupees per Equity Share for its maiden public offer. Investors can bid for a minimum of 15 Equity Shares and in multiples of 15 shares thereafter.
- The LIC has offered a discount of 45 rupees per share to Retail and Eligible Employee Category and 60 rupees per share to Policyholder Category. With this IPO, the government is looking to divest its 3.5 percent stake in the insurer by selling 22 crore 13 lakh shares.
- The Government aims to raise around 21 thousand crore rupees through IPO.
- LIC is recognized as the third-strongest and 10th most-valuable global insurance brand as per the Insurance 100 2021 report released by Brand Finance.
- LIC was also recognized by WPP Kantar as the second most valuable brand in India in the report BrandZ Top 75 Most Valuable Indian Brands for 2018, 2019 and 2020.
World Press Freedom Index 2022
- India’s ranking in the World Press Freedom Index has fallen down to 150th position from last year’s 142nd rank out of 180 countries, according to a report by a global media watchdog released on Tuesday.
- The ranking of India’s neighbours, except that of Nepal, have also slid down, with the index placing Pakistan at 157th position, Sri Lanka 146th, Bangladesh 162nd and Maynmar at 176th position, the report released by Reporters Without Borders said.
- According to the RSF 2022 World Press Freedom Index, Nepal has climbed up by 30 points in the global ranking at 76th position. Last year, the Himalayan nation had been placed at 106th position, Pakistan at 145th, Sri Lanka 127th, Bangladesh 152nd and Myanmar at 140th position in the index.
- This year, Norway (1st) Denmark (2nd), Sweden (3rd) Estonia (4th) and Finland (5th) grabbed the top positions, while North Korea remained at the bottom of the list of the 180 countries and territories ranked by the Reporters Without Borders.
Char Dham Yatra Begins
- The Char Dham yatra began yesterday with the opening of portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarakhand on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya. Portals of Kedarnath Dham will open on May 6, while that of Badrinath Dham on May 8. The gates of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples were opened in the presence of thousands of devotees, and administrative and temple committee officials yesterday. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami along with his wife also visited Gangotri to offer prayers and witness the ceremonious opening of the temple gates.
- A record number of pilgrims are likely to visit Char Dham this year as it is for the first time since 2019 that the yatra has begun without the COVID-induced restrictions in force.
- Uttarakhand government has decided to impose a ban on the movement of vehicles on mountain routes in the state from 10 am to 4 pm in view of the Chardham Yatra. The decision has been taken for the convenience and safe journey of the pilgrims on Char dham Yatra.
India Logs 6.2% Hike In Death Rate During 2020
- The Central government has released the Civil Registration System (CRS) report 2020 based on birth and death reports.
- According to the report, the number of registered births has decreased from 2.48 crore in 2019 to 2.42 crore in the year 2020 showing a decrease of about 2.40 percent.
- The Vital Statistics of India based on the Civil Registration System’ for 2020 report said that case of registered deaths, the number has increased from 76.4 lakh in the year 2019 to 81.2 lakhs in 2020 showing an increase of 6.2 percent. Out of the total registered deaths, the share of males is 60.2 percent and the female share is 39.8 percent. Some states and union territories namely Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, and Haryana have contributed significantly to the increased number of deaths registered from 2019 to 2020.
- In the report, NITI Aayog Member(Health) Dr. V K Paul said that the number of births and deaths incorporated in the report are actual numbers which are collected from around 3 lakh registration units across the country. Dr Paul said, there is no modeling in it.
- CRS is a universal, continuous, compulsory, and permanent recording of birth, death, and still birth. Registration of birth and death is done under Registration of Birth and Death Act (RBD), 1969. These figures include deaths due to COVID-19 and other reasons.
Satyajit Ray Film Festival Being
- The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has initiated various activities to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker.
- A Ray film festival is being organized from today till 4th May, by the National Museum of Indian Cinema, Mumbai. He is the only Indian director who received the Oscar award for his rare mastery of works and profound humanistic approach. After viewing Pather Panchali, renowned film director, Martin Scorsese exclaimed that the movie emerged from the core of Indian rural culture, nothing derived from the culture of other countries. This is the lesson the path-breaking movie disseminates to the viewer.
- Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal today inaugurated Satyajit Ray’s Semi-permanent Gallery at the National Museum of Indian Cinema in Mumbai. Stating that he considers Ray as his inspiration, Mr. Benegal said that Indian cinema got its due recognition due to the master director. He added that Satyajit Ray was not just a filmmaker, but a multifaceted genius who made his own posters and storyboards.
- Satyajit Ray’s Gallery includes his lifelike hyper-realistic statue in characteristic posture. Visitors can interactively explore Ray’s filmography and get an actual glimpse of many of his scenes. The exhibition beautifully exhibits his films, books and his illustrious career as an illustrator as well. One can also find the ghosts floating in air atop the World of Goopy Bagha as a tribute to the ghost dance created in the film ‘Goopy Gayn, Bagha Bayn’.
- Meanwhile, a three-day Satyajit Ray Film Festival to mark the legend’s Birth Anniversary also began in multiple cities, including Mumbai. Director Anik Dutta’s film ‘Aparajito- a tribute to Satyajit Ray’ was the opening film. It portrays Ray’s remarkable efforts in making his debut film ‘Pather Panchali’. Post the screening of the 135-minute Bengali film, the cast and crew including Director Anik Dutta and actor Jeetu Kamal interacted with the audience.
NATGRID Premises Inaugurated At Bengaluru
- Home Minister Amit Shah Inaugurates NATGRID Premises At Bengaluru; Says, Modi Government Pursuing Zero-tolerance Policy Towards Terrorism.
- The National Intelligence Grid or NATGRID is the integrated intelligence master database structure for counter-terrorism purposes connecting databases of various core security agencies under the Government of India collecting comprehensive patterns procured from 21 different organizations that can be readily accessed by security agencies round the clock.
- NATGRID came into existence after the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Harshada Shines At IWF Junior World Championships
- In Weightlifting, Harshada Sharad Garud scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the IWF Junior World Championships at Heraklion in Greece yesterday.
- She lifted 153-kilogram in the 45-kilogram weight category, which included 70 kilograms in Snatch and 83 kilograms in Clean and Jerk to finish on top of the podium. Garud left eight competitors behind as India bagged a medal on the opening day of the competition. Turkey’s Bektas Cansu bagged the silver medal while Moldova’s Teodora-Luminita Hincu won the bronze medal.
- The other Indian in the same weight category, Anjali Patel finished fifth with a total effort of 148 kilograms which included 67 kilograms in snatch and 81 kilograms in clean and jerk.
- Before Harshada, there are only two Indians to win a medal in IWF Junior World Championships. Mirabai Chanu had won a bronze in 2013 and Achinta Sheuli won a silver medal last year.
Kerala Wins Their 7th Santosh Trophy title
- Kerala beat West Bengal 5-4 in the penalty shootout to win the 75th Santosh Trophy 2022 at the Manjeri Stadium in Malappuram, Kerala.
- The teams were level 1-1 after extra time in a pulsating encounter in which plenty of chances were created at both ends with the finishing being astray.
- This is Kerala’s third win in a Santosh Trophy tournament on home soil.
- Earlier, they had won two editions in Kochi, in 1973-74 and 1992-93.
- Kerala captain Jijo Joseph, who was adjudged the player of the match for a commanding performance in the middle of the park.

Zakir Husain Remembered On His Death Anniversary
- Zakir Husain Khan (8 February 1897 – 3 May 1969) was an Indian economist and politician who served as the third president of India, from 13 May 1967 until his death on 3 May 1969.
- He previously served as the governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962 and as the second vice president of India from 1962 to 1967. He was also the co-founder of Jamia Milia Islamia, serving as its vice-chancellor from 1928. Under Husain, Jamia became closely associated with the Indian freedom movement. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian honour) in 1963.
- He was the first Muslim president of India and the first Indian president to die in office.
