Basava Jayanti Celebrated

  • Basava Jayanti is a Hindu festival celebrated by Lingayats in Karnataka, and other parts of south India to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Basavanna.
  • Basavanna, a 12th-century poet and philosopher, is celebrated and held in high regard, especially by the Lingayat community, as he was the founder of Lingayatism.
  • As per the Hindu calendar, the birth of Basavanna falls on the 3rd day of Vaisahaka month in the Shukla paksha. This usually falls either in April of May of the English calendar.
  • Basaveshwara is known to have brought about several social reforms. He believed in a society free of the caste system, with equal opportunity for all and preached about manual hard work.
  • He also founded the Anubhava Mantapa, loosely translated as the forum of experiences, an academy that included Lingayat mystics, saints, and philosophers.
  • These academicians and philosophers would congregate and share experiences and wisdom of life.

Giani Zail Singh Remembered On His Birth Anniversary

  • Giani Zail Singh (5 May 1916 – 25 December 1994) was the 7th president of India, serving from 1982 to 1987, and the first Sikh to hold the office.
  • Prior to his presidency, he was a politician with the Indian National Congress party and had held several ministerial posts in the Union Cabinet, including that of Home Minister.
  • He also served as the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1983 to 1986.
  • His presidency was marked by Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He died of injuries in 1994, after a car accident.

Karl Marx Remembered On His Birth Anniversary

  • Karl Heinrich Marx (5 May 1818 – 14 March 1883) was a German philosopher, critic of political economy, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary.
  • His best-known titles are the 1848 pamphlet The Communist Manifesto and the three-volume Das Kapital (1867–1883).
  • Marx’s political and philosophical thought had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic, and political history.
  • His name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

New Draft National Youth Policy

  • The Government has reviewed the existing draft National Youth Policy, 2014 and prepared a new draft National Youth Policy (NYP).
  • The draft NYP envisages a ten-year vision for youth development that India seeks to achieve by 2030. It is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and serves to ‘unlock the potential of the youth to advance India’.
  • The draft NYP seeks to catalyse widespread action on youth development across five priority areas viz. education; employment & entrepreneurship; youth leadership & development; health, fitness & sports; and social justice.
  • Each priority area is underpinned by the principle of social inclusion keeping in view the interests of the marginalized sections.
  • The Department of Youth Affairs seek comments/views/suggestions on the draft NYP from all stakeholders.

India To Be Country Of Honour At Marche’ Du Film

  • India will be the Official Country of Honour at the upcoming Marche’ Du Film, organised alongside the Cannes Film Festival in France. The festival will be organised from the 17th of this month. This was announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur during a press conference in New Delhi.
  • He said that France and India are marking 75 years of their diplomatic ties and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit to Paris and meeting with President Macron takes even more significance in this context.
  • Mr Thakur said that it is in this significant diplomatic backdrop that India has been chosen as the ‘Country of Honour’ at Marche’ Du Film at the Cannes Film Festival. He said, this is for the first time that such an honour is being bestowed to any country.
  • Mr Thakur also said, India is also a Country of Honour at the Cannes Next, under which five new Start-Ups would be given an opportunity to pitch to the Audio-Visual Industry. Ten professionals will participate on the Animation Day networking. This year the India Pavilion carries a theme- India the Content Hub of the World. It would be inaugurated on the morning of 18th of May. It will showcase Indian cinema across linguistic, cultural, and regional diversities of the country and will serve as networking platform for delegates from across the global community.

India @ 24th Deaflympics

  • At the ongoing 24th Deaflympics at Caxias do Sul in Brazil, The Indian contingent began their campaign on Day 3 with two golds and one bronze medal.
  • Shooter Dhanush Srikanth struck gold in the Men’s 10m air rifle competition while Shourya Saini bagged a bronze, finishing behind Korea’s Kim Woo Rim in the eight-man final.
  • Dhanush shot 247.5, a finals world record score, to emerge triumphant as Kim fell short with 246.6, while Shourya finished third with 224.3.
  • The Indian badminton team also won gold beating Japan 3-1 in the final to make it a double celebrations for the country.
  • India is currently placed eighth on the medals table with two gold and one bronze medal. Ukraine tops the standings currently with 19 gold, six silver and 13 bronze medals.

12th Hockey Sub Junior Men National Championship

  • The 12th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2022 has begun in Goa on Wednesday. A total of 29 teams will participate in the tournament.
  • The participating teams are divided into eight pools. Pool matches will be played on the initial eight days, and these will be followed by Quarter-Finals on May 12 and the Semi-Finals on May 14. The final match is scheduled to be played on  May 15.

Sweden Gets U.S. Assurances In NATO Application

  • Sweden has received assurances from the United States that it would receive support during the period a potential application to join NATO is processed by the 30 nations in the alliance.
  • Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said this in Washington yesterday.
  • Sweden and neighbor Finland stayed out of NATO during the Cold War, but Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its military action in Ukraine have led the countries to rethink their security policies.
  • Both countries are concerned they would be vulnerable during an application process, which could take up to a year to be approved by all NATO members.
  • After meeting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Linde told Swedish TV that she is not going into any details, but she feels that now they have an American assurance.

European Union To Slap New Sanctions On Russia

  • The European Union will slap new sanctions on Russia for its military action against Ukraine, targeting Moscow’s oil industry, more Russian banks, and those responsible for misinformation, the EU’s top diplomat said. Josep Borrell, head of the foreign policy unit at the EU’s executive European Commission, said in a tweet yesterday that they are working on the sixth package of sanctions which aims to de-SWIFT more banks, list disinformation actors, and tackle oil imports.
  • The latest round of sanctions would also affect Sberbank, Russia’s top lender, diplomats said, adding it to several banks that have already been excluded from the SWIFT messaging system.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin put the West on notice yesterday that he could terminate exports and deals in response to the sanctions burden imposed by the EU and the United States.
  • An embargo on Russian oil would deprive Moscow of a large revenue stream, but reaching an agreement on the measure has divided countries of the bloc, which relies on Russia for 26 percent of its oil imports.
  • Hungary and Germany were among those with reservations against an oil embargo.
