MoD Approves Three Private Sector Banks To Provide Financial Services In Overseas Procurement
- In line with further opening of allocation of Government business to Private Sector Banks by the Department of Financial Services, MoD has assigned three Private Sector Banks viz HDFC Bank Ltd., ICICI Bank and Axis Bank to provide the Letter of Credit and Direct Bank Transfer business for overseas procurement by the Ministry.
- Till now, only authorised public sector banks were utilised to provide these services to MoD. With this for the first time three Private Banks have also been allowed to provide financial services for overseas procurement by MoD.
- The selected banks may be allocated with LC business of Rs 2000 Crore, each on the capital and revenue side, for a period of one year on concurrent basis (Rs 666 Crore for each bank under both capital as well as Revenue). The performance of these Banks will be monitored regularly so as to take necessary further action as required.
PNB signs MoU with IAF for ‘PNB Rakshak Plus Scheme’
- PNB, the nation’s leading Public Sector Bank, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to provide specially designed products to the defence personnel under the bank’s flagship scheme of ‘PNB Rakshak Plus’.
- This scheme includes, inter alia, personal accidental insurance, and air accidental insurance to serving, retired and trainees of the defence forces, central armed police forces, state police force, metro police and retired defence pensioners.
- The salient features of “PNB Rakshak Plus” include:
- – Personal Accidental (Death) cover of Rs 50 lakh.
- – Air Accidental (Death) Insurance cover of Rs 100 lakh.
- – Personal Accidental (Permanent Total Disability) cover of Rs 50 lakh.
- – Sweep Facility – Initial threshold amount – Rs 10000/-
- – Minimum Sweep In/Out – Rs 1000/-
IAF Will Get An LCA Trainer By 2023
- HAL has already begun producing LCA Tejas Trainer aircraft in FOC mode; the first batch of 4 aircraft will be delivered this year, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited aims to finish delivering 14 additional aircraft by the end of 2023.
- IAF had ordered 4 LCA Trainers in IOC configuration and 14 Trainers in FOC configuration in three batches, but all 18 will be in the chosen final configuration.
- The launch of LCA LIFT, which will be utilised for demonstration and trials to suit the requirements of the Indian Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Egyptian Air Force, and even Malaysia, may occur sometime in late 2025. LCA LIFT will be based on the LCA Trainer aircraft.
- Malaysia has been offered 10 Tejas Mk1A and 8 LCA-Trainer aircraft to meet its requirements for its Tender for 18 Light Combat Jets, As per Malaysian media reports by August, it is expected that the winner of the tender will be announced and the deal might be concluded sometime in mid-2023.
- HAL which claims to be a front runner in the Malaysian tender will deliver the first batch of LCA-Trainer from 2026 onwards and later 10 Tejas Mk1A by 2028.
Jaishankar Holds Wide-ranging Discussions With Singapore’s Defence Minister
- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is in Singapore, met with the island nation’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen on Wednesday and held wide-ranging discussions.
- Earlier on Wednesday, Jaishankar also met with Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and held discussions on boosting bilateral relationships along with sharing views on the global situation.
- Singapore is India’s 6th largest trade partner (2020-21) with a share of 3.2 per cent of India’s overall trade. In 2021-22 (April – September 2021) bilateral trade stood at USD 14.2 billion.
- In 2020-21, bilateral trade stood at USD 21.98 billion. The cumulative FDI inflows from Singapore to India stood at USD 118.39 billion (April 2000 -June 2021) which is 22 pc of total FDI inflows in India. Singapore was the largest source of FDI in India in 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21.
Deputy NSA-level meeting of Colombo Security Conclave
- The Sixth Deputy National Security Adviser-level meeting of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) is scheduled to take place in Kochi on Thursday.
- The meeting in Kochi will discuss the way forward and implementation of the 2022-23 Roadmap for Cooperation and Activities.
- The members of the Conclave are India, Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and Seychelles as observers. The CSC started as a trilateral maritime cooperation mechanism between India, Maldives and Sri Lanka in 2011. The Secretariat of the CSC is located in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
- The members have identified five pillars for cooperation, namely- Maritime Safety and Security; Countering Terrorism and Radicalization; Combating Trafficking and Organised Crime; Cyber Security, Protection of Critical Infrastructure and Technology and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.
