89th Anniversary of Indian Air Force
- President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have extended greetings to the air warriors, veterans, and their families on Air Force Day.
- Every year on 8 October, this special day is celebrated at the Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad city.
- The Indian Air Force was recognised and established on 8 October 1932, by the British Empire. Also known as Bharatiya Vayu Sena, its first operational squadron or regiment came into being in April 1933. Additionally, only after its involvement and participation in World War II, the Air Force in India came to be identified as the Royal Indian Air Force.
- This year Indian Air Force Day parade paid tribute to all the unsung heroes of the 1971 war in which India defeated Pakistan and led to the creation of Bangladesh.
- During the grand parade, the IAF also included formations with call signs related to people involved in the war and the places. However, the theme last year for IAF Day was “the untiring efforts and supreme sacrifices of its personnel”.
- The Motto of Indian Air Force (Touch the sky with Glory) has been taken from eleventh chapter of the Gita, the Discourse given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Great War of Mahabharata.
Exercise AJEYA WARRIOR-2021
- 6th Edition of India – UK Joint Company Level Military Training Exercise AJEYA WARRIOR has commenced in Uttarakhand.
- Earlier, India and the UK participated in a two-day bilateral Passage Exercise (PASSEX) in the Bay of Bengal.
- The exercise is conducted alternatively in the United Kingdom and India.
- The exercise is part of an initiative to develop interoperability and sharing expertise with friendly foreign nations.
Journalists Maria Ressa, Dmitry Muratov win Nobel Peace Prize
- Maria Ressa of Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia for their fight for freedom of expression in their countries.
- The pair were honoured for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace, said the chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen.
- 58 years old Ressa and 59 years old Rappler have also documented how social media is being used to spread fake news, harass opponents, and manipulate public discourse.
- Ressa, a former CNN correspondent who also holds US citizenship, is currently on bail pending an appeal against a conviction last year in a cyber libel case, for which she faces up to six years in prison.
- Muratov, has defended freedom of speech in Russia for decades, under increasingly challenging conditions.
Doon Drone Mela in Uttarakhand
- Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia along with the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, General (Retd.) Dr. V.K. Singh flagged off the Doon Drone Mela 2021 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
- Shri Scindia flagged off the event with a paragliding demonstration and interacted with the drone companies exhibiting their prototypes at the Doon Drone Mela.
- On the occasion, Shri Scindia said, “We recognise the immense opportunities which usage of drones bring in.
- The Government of India is working towards enabling the same with a liberalized drone policy and the launch of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.
- We insist that the Uttarakhand Government works towards developing Dehradun as an Aero sports and Drone Hub of India,” said Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia.”
Government Approves Air India Disinvestment
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) – empowered Air India Specific Alternative Mechanism (AISAM) approved the highest price bid of M/s Talace Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of M/s Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd for sale of 100% equity shareholding of Government of India in Air India along with equity shareholding of Air India in AIXL and AISATS.
- The winning bid is for Rs 18,000 crore as Enterprise Value (EV) consideration for AI (100% shares of AI along with AI’s shareholding in AIXL and AISATS).
- The transaction does not include non-core assets including land and building, valued at Rs 14,718 crore, which are to be transferred to GoI’s Air India Asset Holding Limited (AIAHL).
I-Sprint’21
- International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and GIFT City launched I-Sprint’21, the global FinTech Hackathon Series of IFSCA on 7th October 2021.
- The first Sprint of the series “Sprint01: BankTech” is focussed on FinTechs for the Banking sector.
- This hackathon is first under the I-Sprint series focusing on the Banking Sector and is one of its kind being backed by a Regulator. It shall be conducted virtually and is open to eligible FinTechs from across the Globe.
- The aim of the Hackathon is:
- to connect IFSCA and GIFT IFSC with FinTech Ecosystem
- to solve Business Problems for the Banking Units at GIFT IFSC and
- to promote retail business for the Banking Units at GIFT IFSC.
‘MyPortApp’ for Digital Monitoring of Port Operations
- Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal launched a port mobile application called MyPortApp in Kolkata.
- The App includes all port details digitally and monitor operations virtually. Targeted towards Port Users for availing various Port services, the App is aimed to promote transparency and easy access of port related information.
- The app also has various information like Vessel Berthing, Rake & Indent, Rake Receipt, Container Status, Tariff, Bills, Port Holidays, etc. and can be accessed anywhere 24×7 and reach out directly to port.
- The Minister is on a 2-day visit to West Bengal where he inaugurated, launched, and dedicated to Nation several projects worth Rs 352 crore.
