DRDO & IIT Delhi Develop ABHED Light Weight Bullet Proof Jackets

  • DRDO along with researchers of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has developed Light Weight Bullet Proof Jackets named ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat).
  • The jackets have been developed at the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT, Delhi. These jackets have been created from polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic material.
  • With minimum possible weight of 8.2 kgs and 9.5 kgs for different BIS Levels, these modular-design jackets having front & rear armours provide 360o protection.

Air Marshal SP Dharkar To Be The Next IAF Vice Chief

  • Ace fighter pilot Air Marshal SP Dharkar has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of Air Staff.
  • He would be succeeding incumbent Air Marshal AP Singh, who has been designated as the next Chief of Air Staff.
  • Dharkar– an experienced fighter pilot with over 3600 hours of flying. He is an alumnus of the RIMC Dehradun, NDA Pune, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and Air War College, USA. Commissioned in June 1985, he is a Qualified Flying Instructor, Fighter Strike Leader, and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner and has also been an Air Force Examiner.

Vladimir Putin Declares Changes To Russian Nuclear Doctrine

  • President Vladimir Putin of Russia said Wednesday that he planned to lower the threshold for his country’s use of nuclear weapons, an escalation in the Kremlin’s efforts to deter the United States from expanding its military aid to Ukraine.
  • Putin, in a televised meeting with top officials, said Russia would adjust its nuclear doctrine — the document defining when the country could use nuclear weapons — to address “new sources of military threats and risks.”
  • Putin also said Russia would be prepared to use a nuclear weapon even in response to an attack carried out with conventional weapons that creates “a critical threat to our sovereignty.”

India’s Defence Production Hits Record Rs 1.27 Lakh Crore

  • India’s defence production hit a record high of Rs 1.27 lakh crore in 2023-24, with the country exporting military hardware to over 90 nations, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Wednesday. The milestone aligns with the 10th anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ programme under the NDA government.
  • In recent years, several measures were taken to promote domestic defence manufacturing, focusing on enhancing military preparedness, particularly along the China border. Defence exports surpassed Rs 21,000 crore for the first time in 2023-24. The ministry targets increasing this to Rs 50,000 crore within five years.
  • India remains one of the largest arms importers globally. The Indian armed forces are expected to spend about USD 130 billion on capital procurement by 2029. To reduce reliance on imported military platforms, the government supports domestic defence manufacturing.

High-Altitude Marathon in Spiti valley

  • The Indian Army will organise the Spiti Marathon 2024, a first-of-its-kind high-altitude marathon, as part of Operation Sadbhavana on September 28-29, 2024. This historic event will take place at the Him Yodha Military Station, Sumdo in Kaza Sub-division, Lahaul-Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh.
  • The Spiti Marathon aims to highlight the Indian Army’s initiatives in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh, promote local culture, and boost tourism in border areas, according to an official statement from the army.

Pakistan: 12 Injured, Including Cop, In Quetta

  • Twelve people sustained injuries following a blast that targeted a police van near Eastern Bypass in Quetta, hospital and government officials reported on Wednesday.
  • Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed that the police van was the intended target. The Balochistan Health Department also released details of the 12 individuals injured in the explosion, Dawn reported. Rind condemned the attack and confirmed that a policeman was among those hurt.
  • Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in terrorist activity, with 59 attacks recorded in August compared to 38 in July, as per data maintained by the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), an Islamabad-based think-tank.
