S Jaishankar To Visit Pak

  • S Jaishankar will visit Pakistan later this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, becoming the first External Affairs Minister to do so in nine years. The last visit was by Sushma Swaraj in 2015.
  • External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that Mr Jaishankar will lead a delegation to Pakistan to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting.
  • “The EAM will lead our delegation to Pakistan to participate in the SCO summit which will be held in Islamabad on October 15 and 16,” Mr Jaiswal said, emphasising that the visit will be limited to attending the summit. Pakistan had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the meeting in August.
  • The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and India was an observer country for the first time in 2005. It became a permanent member, along with Pakistan, in 2017.
  • India was the chair of the organisation in 2023 and hosted the SCO summit in the virtual format in July of that year.

  • Biden was asked on Wednesday whether he would support strikes against Iranian nuclear sites and the US president told reporters: “The answer is no.”

Were Ahead of China On Tech In Past But Have Lagged: ACM Amar Preet Singh

  • India was better than China when it came to military technology some time back but has lagged and needs to catch up, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh said on Friday, adding that in terms of production capacity, India is “way behind”.
  • The officer, who took charge earlier this month, said the Air Force needs new multi-role fighter jets “as of yesterday” but a decision on the process to acquire them has been pending.
  • “As far as technology is concerned, we may not be so good as of now. We have lagged. We were better than them in technology also, some time back. But we have lagged on that, and we need to catch up. As far as production rates are concerned, we are way behind. We need to catch up with them,” the Air chief said.

Project 33: US Navy unveils seven-point plan to counter China

  • US Navy has unveiled “Project 33,” a comprehensive seven-point strategy to counter Beijing’s growing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, with a focus on preparing for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan by 2027, Taiwan News reported.
  • As tensions in the Taiwan Strait continue to simmer, US Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Lisa Franchetti introduced a ‘strategic document’ outlining plans to bolster Taiwan’s defence capabilities.
  • This strategic move is driven by anticipated fiscal and industrial constraints by 2027. The Navy aims to optimise its current capabilities, particularly drones and unmanned systems, to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving maritime landscape.
