Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold discussions with President of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in New Delhi on bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.
- Several agreements are also expected to be signed between the two countries following the meeting. This is President Dr Muizzu’s first bilateral visit to India. He had earlier visited in June this year to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers.
- Maldives is India’s key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region and holds a special place in Prime Minister’s vision of SAGAR and India’s Neighbourhood First Policy.
- The visit of Maldivian President to India after the recent visit of the External Affairs Minister to the island nation is testimony to the importance that India attaches to its relations with Maldives.
- The visit is expected to lend further momentum to cooperation and robust people to people ties between the two countries. India provides the largest number of training opportunities for Maldivian National Defence Force, meeting around 70 per cent of their defence training requirements.
Banjara Virasat Museum
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Banjara Virasat Museum in Pohardevi at Washim in Maharashtra, celebrating the rich heritage of the Banjara community.
- The four-story museum has 13 galleries depicting the Banjara legacy through the portraits of Banjara community leaders and the Banjara movement.
- After his arrival in Washim Prime Minister also paid floral tribute to the memorials of Sant Sevalal Maharaj and Sant Ramrao Maharaj.
- Sant Sevalal and Sant Ramrao Maharaj are the spiritual leaders of the Banjara community.
- Prime Minister addressed a function at Washim for the launch of various initiatives related to the agricultural and animal husbandry sectors worth around 23,300 crore rupees.
National Agriculture Code
- Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is developing a new set of guidelines called the National Agriculture Code (NAC).
- This is similar to the existing national codes used for buildings and electrical systems, but specifically for agriculture.
- The goal is to create a set of standards that can help improve the quality and efficiency of farming practices in India, which currently lack detailed regulations.
- The NAC is a plan to create rules and guidelines that will cover various agricultural practices across the country.
- These guidelines will aim to standardize farming methods to ensure that they are efficient, safe, and of high quality.
- This is important because, while there are already standards for things like farming machinery, fertilizers, and pesticides, many other areas of farming do not have clear rules.
- Although the BIS has already set standards for specific items like machinery and fertilizers, many other parts of farming do not follow a standard process. These areas include:
- Land preparation (getting the field ready for planting)
- Irrigation (how water is used for crops)
- Sustainable farming practices
- This lack of clear rules is a problem that policymakers have recognized for a long time. They believe that having a strong framework like the NAC will help make farming more organized and efficient.
International Medical Device Regulators Forum
- India’s Union Health Ministry announced that the country has become an affiliate member of the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF).
- This is a big step for India because it will allow the country to work closely with other countries to improve how medical devices are regulated and approved.
- The IMDRF was created in 2011 and is a global group of organizations that regulate medical devices.
- Its goal is to make sure that medical devices are safe and follow the same standards around the world.
- Some of the key members of the IMDRF are countries like the United States, the European Union, Japan, and even the World Health Organization (WHO). India, through its Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), applied for membership in 2024 to better align its medical device regulations with international standards.
- By doing this, India hopes to improve the quality and safety of medical devices made in the country and make it easier for these devices to compete in the global market.
Italy And Switzerland
- The redrawing of borders between Italy and Switzerland is a striking response to the rapid melting of glaciers caused by climate change.
- As global temperatures rise, glaciers in the Alps are shrinking, leading to shifts in natural watershed lines that have historically defined the frontier between these two countries.
- Italy is expected to approve the changes soon, which primarily affect regions around the Matterhorn.
- As glaciers retreat, the highest points of these glaciers are moving, which means that Italy will lose some territory while Switzerland gains it.
- This shift has economic implications, particularly for tourism-dependent regions, where ski resorts and Alpine sports attract visitors from both countries. Europe is experiencing some of the fastest warming in the world, with glaciers losing volume at alarming rates.
- In 2023 alone, Swiss glaciers recorded a 4% loss of their volume, marking a cumulative decline of 10% over two years.
- This decline poses risks to water security, ecosystems, and increased natural hazards, not only in the Alps but also globally, with similar phenomena observed in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region.
- Alpine border refers to the national boundaries that traverse the Alpine region, which is characterized by its high mountains, glaciers, and unique ecosystems. This border primarily includes the territories of several European countries, most notably Italy and Switzerland, but also extends to Austria, France, and Germany.
First Diagnostic Test For Mpox
- World Health Organization has announced that it has approved the first diagnostic test for Mpox disease.
- The emergency use authorisation is expected to significantly enhance diagnostic capacity in countries experiencing Mpox outbreaks, where the demand for quick and accurate testing has surged.
- So far, over 800 people have died from Mpox in Africa, with more than 30,000 cases reported.
- According to the African Union’s disease control center, the disease has been detected in 16 countries, with the most severe impact seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Mpox is caused by a virus transmitted to humans from infected animals and can spread between people through close physical contact. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and large boil-like skin lesions.
Hamburg Sustainability Conference
- Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, on a three-day visit to Germany. During his visit, the minister will attend the two-day Hamburg Sustainability Conference.
- He will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with ministers from Germany, the United Kingdom, and other senior officials to boost cooperation in sustainable development, green hydrogen, low-cost finance, and the entire renewable energy value chain.
- The visit aims to strengthen India-Germany relations, create business opportunities, and accelerate the expansion of renewable energy in India and globally.
