Cabinet Decision On Rs10,700 Cr Equity Infusion In FCI

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the cabinet decision on the infusion of equity of ten thousand seven hundred crore rupees in the Food Corporation of India (FCI). In a social media post, Mr Modi said, the infusion will enhance FCI’s capacity to manage food procurement and distribution efficiently.

  • It will ensure better support for farmers and contribute to national food security.
  • The Prime Minister also lauded the approval of the PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme to support the youth with quality education.
  • The scheme is a significant step towards empowering the Yuva Shakti and building a brighter future for our nation.

India-CARICOM Joint Commission

  • The second meeting of the India-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Joint Commission was held in virtual mode. The Indian delegation was led by Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs Jaideep Mazumdar and the CARICOM side was led by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy, Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Chair of COFCOR (CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations) Ms. Barbara Dailey  Representatives from CARICOM Secretariat, CARICOM member states and Ministries in Government of India participated in the virtual meeting.

  • The Joint Commission reviewed the entire spectrum of relations between India and CARICOM including economic and commercial, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, energy and infrastructure, technology and innovation, human resource and capacity building, culture and people-to-people exchange.

  • Both sides deliberated on strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing trade and fostering a robust partnership in the areas of education, digital public infrastructure, development cooperation, renewable energy, science and technology, climate change adaptation, disaster management and resilient infrastructure.
  • Ministry of External Affairs said, both sides also noted with satisfaction enhanced frequency of high-level interactions between India and CARICOM, including the India-CARICOM Foreign Ministerial Meeting held on 27 September this year in New York and forthcoming engagements.

India – Zambia

  • India has expressed concern over the ongoing drought situation in Zambia and underscored its pledge to provide material assistance to Zambia in the form of 2,500 metric tons of maize, which is expected to reach Zambia soon.
  • The issue was discussed during the 6th session of the Zambia-India Joint Permanent Commission in Lusaka, Zambia.

  • The session was co-chaired by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Zambia, Mulambo Haimbe.
  • During the session, both leaders reviewed and discussed cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, education, energy, defence, and culture.
  • Both sides also appreciated the growing momentum in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

National Counter Terrorism Policy

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Government will soon bring National Counter Terrorism Policy and Strategy to fight terrorism and the terrorist ecosystem.
  • Inaugurating two-day Anti-Terror Conference organised by National Investigation Agency NIA in New Delhi, Mr Shah said, in the last 10 years, since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took charge, the government has adopted a strong approach against terrorism.

  • Mr Modi’s call for zero tolerance against terrorism has been hailed all around the globe. Mr Shah said, a strong ecosystem has been developed in the country to fight against terrorism in the last ten years.
  • There has been a 70 per cent reduction in terrorist incidents from 2014 to 2021 in comparison to the period 2006 to 2013.
  • Union Home Minister said, the terrorist attacks and their conspiracy are against the country in a borderless and invisible manner. He stressed the need for special training for young officers saying they have to be equipped with the latest technologies.
  • Mr Shah said the three criminal laws will be the most modern and technically advanced in the world. He said, several laws related to security have been amended in recent times.
  • During his speech, Mr Shah paid tributes to 36 thousand 468 police personnel who have sacrificed their lives to maintain the internal security and security of the borders of the country since Independence.

Volcanic Eruption

  • In Indonesia, Mount Lewotobi in  East Nusa Tenggara province erupted again today, spewing a column of ash up to 5,000 meters high and prompting the highest aviation alert.
  • The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre reported that the eruption occurred this morning. According to media reports, Mount Lewotobi is at the highest alert level, with a designated danger zone extending 7 kilometres from the crater.

  • A Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation has been issued at the red level, the highest warning, which prohibits flights below 6,000 meters around the crater. Aircraft are also advised to be prepared for ash clouds, which could disrupt flight operations.
  • Mount Lewotobi erupted late Sunday night, resulting in 10 fatalities and injuries to 63. Hot clouds and volcanic materials destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings, triggering fires in the area and displacing over 4,000 residents. Standing at 1,584 meters, Mount Lewotobi is one of Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes.

Recruitment Rules : SC

  • Supreme Court held that recruitment rules for appointment in government jobs cannot be changed midway unless it is prescribed. 
  • A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud held that ‘rules of the game’ once set before the start of recruitment process cannot be tinkered with midway.

  • The bench also said that the selection rules should not be arbitrary and be in accordance with Article 14 of the Constitution.  
  • The top court unanimously held that transparency and non-discrimination should be the hallmarks of the public recruitment process and candidates should not be taken by surprise by change of rules midway.

India & ADB Sign $200 Million Loan

  • Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an important $200 million loan. This funding aims to improve urban services in Uttarakhand.
  • The agreement was signed by key officials from both organizations. This project is part of a broader urban development agenda in India.
  • The project is named the Uttarakhand Livability Improvement Project. Its goals include enhancing water supply, sanitation, urban mobility, and overall urban services in the state. It focuses on improving the livability and sustainability of cities in Uttarakhand.
