India Successfully Tests Long-range Hypersonic Missile

  • India tested its first long range hypersonic missile on Saturday night, entering an elite club of nations that have the ability to launch a weapon that is almost impossible to intercept.
  • The land-launched missile has been under development for the past decade and several variants are expected to enter service in the coming years. “The missile was tracked by various range systems, deployed in multiple domains.
  • The flight data obtained from down range ship stations confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high degree of accuracy,” officials said. The missile has been indigenously developed by laboratories of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile complex, Hyderabad, along with various other DRDO laboratories and Industry Partners, they added.
  • This hypersonic missile can reportedly carry various payloads for ranges over 1500km for all the Services of the Indian Armed Forces.
  • Hypersonic weapons are those which travel at hypersonic speed, defined as between 5 and 25 times the speed of sound or about 1 to 5 miles per second.
  • On November 12, DRDO conducted the maiden flight-test of Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha from a mobile articulated launcher.

Amit Shah Reviews Security Situation In Manipur

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday convened a high-level meeting with senior officials in the national capital to assess the security situation in Manipur.
  • Sources indicated that the Home Minister has planned to hold a detailed review meeting on Monday to address the concerns and strategies surrounding the fragile security scenario that has gripped Manipur in recent days.
  • This visit comes as the security situation remains volatile, with the CRPF playing a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability.
  • The bodies – three of which were were pulled from a river in Jiribam on Friday while three more were found on Saturday – are suspected to be of those belonging to the Meitei community who went missing in Jiribam district after a gunfight between Kuki insurgents and Manipur police last week.

President Biden for the first time OKs Ukraine’s use of US-supplied long-range missiles

  • President Joe Biden has for the first time authorized the use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine to strike inside Russia, according to one U.S. official and three people familiar with the matter.
  • The decision is a major U.S. policy shift and comes as Biden is about to leave office and incoming President-elect Donald Trump has said he would bring about a swift end to the war and has expressed skepticism over continued support by the United States.
  • Some supporters have argued that this and other U.S. constraints could cost Ukraine the war. The debate has become a source of disagreement among Ukraine’s NATO allies.

What are ATACMS, the US missiles that may be used Against Russia

  • For the first time, the Biden administration has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied ballistic missiles for attacks inside Russia, U.S. officials say, marking a major policy shift.
  • The missiles are known as the Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS. They are likely to be initially employed against Russian and North Korean troops to support Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of western Russia, according to U.S. officials.
  • Ukraine has been lobbying the United States for years to receive the authorization, which comes in the final months of the Biden administration. President-elect Donald Trump has said he will seek a quick end to the war in Ukraine.
  • ATACMS, made by Lockheed Martin, are short-range ballistic missiles that, depending on the model, can strike targets 190 miles away with a warhead containing about 375 pounds of explosives.
