Exercise ‘Garud Shakti’ 2024
- The Indian Army contingent comprising 25 personnel went for Cijantung, Jakarta, Indonesia took part in the 9th edition of India-Indonesia Joint Special Forces Exercise GARUD SHAKTI 24. The Exercise was conducted from 1st to 12th of November 2024.
- The Indian contingent represented by troops from The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) and Indonesian contingent comprising 40 personnel is being represented by Indonesian Special Forces Kopassus.
Exercise (SIMBEX)- 2024 Concludes
- The 31st edition of Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) was conducted from 23 to 29 Oct 2024. RSS Tenacious of Republic of Singapore Navy along with Indian Navy’s INS Shivalik of Eastern Fleet and Long-Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P8I participated in the exercise.
- The Harbour phase of the exercise was held at Visakhapatnam from 23 – 25 Oct 24 which included Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs), cross-deck visits, sports fixtures and pre-sail discussions.
Exercise VINBAX 2024
- The 5th Edition of Vietnam Indian Bilateral Army Exercise “VINBAX 2024” commenced at Ambala. The exercise scheduled to be conducted from 04 to 23 November 2024 at Ambala and Chandi mandir.
- The exercise is a sequel to previously conducted bilateral exercise in Vietnam in 2023 and a major milestone in strengthening the bilateral relations between India and Vietnam.
- The Indian Army contingent comprising 47 personnel is being represented by a Regiment of the Corps of Engineers along with personnel from other arms and services.
Bharat Forge, Tata Likely to Get DRDO-Made Towed Guns Deal
- Bharat Forge has emerged as the lowest bidder in an estimated ₹7,000 crore deal for advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) developed by DRDO for the Indian Army.
- The order is likely to be split 60:40 between Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), the two developmental partners for the indigenous guns.
- Sources said that commercial bids for the order of 307 guns were opened last week and after scrutiny it was determined that Bharat Forge is the lowest bidder. As per rules of procurement, TASL will get 40% of the order share if it matches the price bid put up by its competitor.
- The towed guns have been extensively tested by the Army in different terrains, from desert areas to high altitude ranges in Sikkim, and have been declared fit for induction. Designed by DRDO to replace the Bofors towed guns that are the current mainstay 155 mm artillery system in service, the ATAGS have already been exported to Armenia.
- Bharat Forge and TASL will also be top contenders. The advanced 155mm/52 calibre guns will be lighter and more versatile than current artillery guns, including ATAGS.
Third Edition of ‘Mahasagar’
- The third edition of the high-level virtual interaction MAHASAGAR was conducted by the Indian Navy on 05 Nov 24, during which Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff interacted with Heads of Navies.
- The interaction’s theme was ‘Training Cooperation to Mitigate Common Maritime Security Challenges in IOR’.MAHASAGAR which stands for vast ocean in Hindi, is the Indian Navy’s flagship outreach for high-level virtual interaction between Maritime Heads for Active Security And Growth for All in the Region.
- The initiative, started by the Indian Navy, is conducted bi-annually and has garnered wide acceptance among the participating nations ever since its inception in 2023.
Exercise ‘Indus Shield-Chinese’
- Air Forces of Pakistan and China on Tuesday concluded an exercise aimed at validating interoperability between the two countries in the face of “contemporary air combat challenges.”
- Indus Shield-Chinese, a bilateral module of Exercise Indus Shield 2024, was conducted separately between Chinese and Pakistan air forces at an operational air base of Pakistan Air Force, according to an official statement from Rawalpindi.
- The exercise witnessed participation from People’s Liberation Army Air Force of China with its personnel and high-tech equipment.
- The equipment comprised AESA Radar and Long Range BVR Equipped J-16 & J-10C fighter aircraft, Lethal HQ-22 Surface to Air Defence system, Potent Airborne Electronic Warfare YTG-9 Platform, alongside KJ-500 Airborne Early Warning system.
Indian Army Inducts 550 Made in India ‘Asmi’
- In a significant boost to the nation’s Atmanirbharta initiative, the Indian Army has inducted 550 made-in-India ‘Asmi’ machine pistols into Northern Command.
- The weapon has been made by the Indian Army in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- “This 100% Made-in-India weapon’s induction demonstrates the unwavering commitment of #IndianArmy towards #AtmanirbharBharat to propel the Nation towards self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing,” they added.
Anti-Terror Conference-2024
- Amit Shah addressed inaugural session of ‘Anti-Terror Conference-2024’ on Thursday, 7th November 2024 in New Delhi. The two-day conference organized by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Ministry of Home Affairs.
- The annual conference has over the years emerged as a meeting point for operational forces; technical, legal and forensic experts and agencies engaged in counter terrorism for deliberations on issues impacting national security and threats emerging out of terrorism.
- The key focus of the conference is on developing synergies among various stake holders by establishing channels for coordinated action against the menace of terrorism in the spirit of ‘Whole of the Government approach’ and to present substantive inputs for future policy formulation.
Sig Sauer Ties Up With Nibe Group, To Make Firearms In India
- Having already secured a contract to supply around 1,45,000 assault rifles to the Indian Army, American arms maker Sig Sauer on Wednesday said that it will manufacture a portion of these firearms in India.
- Announcing its partnership with Pune-based Nibe Group, the company stated that India is its “largest procurement source” globally.
- Sig Sauer’s CEO and President Ron Cohen told that by 2025, the company plans to manufacture a complete product in India, initially for the Indian market, including the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- Cohen also revealed that the company has recently received an additional order for 73,000 Sig 716 assault rifles, which it will deliver throughout 2025.
Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2024
- The 3rd edition of joint military Exercise AUSTRAHIND commenced at Foreign Training Node, Pune in Maharashtra. The exercise conducted from 8th to 21st November 2024.
- Exercise AUSTRAHIND is an annual event conducted alternatively in India and Australia. Last edition of the same exercise was conducted in Australia in December 2023.
- The Indian contingent comprising 140 personnel represented mainly by a battalion of the DOGRA Regiment and 14 personnel from the Indian Air Force.
HQ IDS Conducts First Annual Niche Technology Nexus Seminar
- Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), in collaboration with the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies, conducted the inaugural Annual Niche Technology Nexus (NTN-2024) Seminar in New Delhi.
- The seminar, titled ‘Innovating Tomorrow’s Battlefront with Quantum and Electronic Mastery,’ provided insights into transforming defence operations to enhance Aatmanirbharta, aligning with India’s goal for self-reliance in defence technology.
- The NTN-2024 Seminar served as a collaborative platform for academia, industry experts, research organisations, and the defence sector to explore advancements in these niche fields and their potential implications for national defence.
Handing Over Two Interceptors To Mozambique
- Government of India gifted two water-jet propelled Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) to the Government of Mozambique on 08 Nov 24. The FICs were transshipped from India by INS Gharial.
- These water-jet-propelled boats have a top speed of 45 knots and a range of 200 nautical miles at 12 knots. They can carry a crew of five personnel and are equipped with machine guns and bullet-resistant cabins.
- The two FICs will significantly aid the Government of Mozambique in its effort to combat maritime terrorism and ongoing insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province.
France Evaluating Pinaka MBRL System
- A top French Army officer said that they were evaluating the Indian Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems for their requirements.
- The Pinaka MBRL is developed by the DRDO and produced by agencies including Solar Industries, Larsen and Toubro, Tata and Ordnance Factory Board companies.
- The rocket system which can hit targets at 75 kilometres and beyond with its multiple variants has already been an export success as it has been ordered by Armenia and many other countries are showing interest in it.
- He said that for the 25th edition of the war games, the French Army would be inviting a strong detachment of the Indian Army to their country.
- France is the 2nd largest importer of Indian defence equipment after the US with a lot of electronics items going there from India.
Project ‘Shaurya Gatha’
- CDS General Anil Chauhan launched Project ‘Shaurya Gatha,’ a joint initiative by the Department of Military Affairs and the United Service Institution (USI) of India.
- The project aims to preserve and promote India’s military heritage through educational programmes and tourism.
- The Indian Military Heritage Festival seeks to bridge this gap in national discourse and the nation’s cultural calendar.
Exercise ‘Antariksha Abhyas – 2024’
- ‘Antariksha Abhyas – 2024’, a 3-day Exercise to war-game the growing threats from and to Space Based Assets and Services, is being conducted by the Defence Space Agency of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff from 11 – 13 Nov 24.
- Exercise Antariksha Abhyas is a first of its kind exercise being conducted and is expected to help secure national strategic objectives in space and integrate India’s space capability in military operations.
- The Space Exercise aims to provide enhanced understanding of space-based assets and services and to gain understanding of operational dependency on space segment between stakeholders.
Indigenous Development of Silicon Carbide Wafers
- Solid State Physics Laboratory, a DRDO laboratory, has successfully developed indigenous processes for growing and manufacturing 4-inch diameter Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafers and fabricating Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors upto 150W & Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits up to 40W for applications up to X-band frequencies.
- GaN/SiC technology is a critical enabler of next-generation applications across defence, aerospace, and clean energy sectors.
- This advanced technology offers improved efficiency, reduced size and weight, and enhanced performance, making it essential for future combat systems, RADARS, electronic warfare systems, and green energy solutions.
BDL Signs MoU with Russia’s Rosoboronexport
- Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) announced that it has signed a MoU with Russia’s Rosoboronexport (ROE) to collaborate on the Pantsir air defence missile-gun systems.
- The Pantsir-S1 system is a mobile, short-range air defence system equipped with both missile and gun capabilities. Describing the system, Rosoboronexport in a prior statement said, “Pantsir-S1 Air Defence Missile and Gun System: Perfect protection for any object.”
- The Pantsir-S1’s capabilities include engaging targets within a range of 1,200 to 20,000 meters using missiles, and 200 to 4,000 meters with gun weapons. The altitude range for missiles is from 15 to 15,000 meters, while guns can engage targets between 0 to 3,000 meters.
- It can also handle up to four targets simultaneously and engage objects moving at speeds of up to 1,000 meters per second.
Inauguration of C-295 Full Motion Simulator
- Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, AOC-in-C CAC inaugurated the IAF C-295 Full Motion Simulator (FMS) facility on 11 Nov 24 at Air Force Station Agra. A significant proportion of the pilot’s training can be undertaken in the simulator thereby saving precious flying hours on the aircraft.
- The state of the art simulator enables the pilots to train in near realistic environment by simulating various missions like tactical airlift, para-dropping, para-trooping, medical evacuation, disaster relief and also enables simulation of several critical situations that can be encountered in actual operations, ensuring that our pilots are battle ready.
- It will allow pilots to hone their skills in handling high risk emergencies that require time critical decisions, thereby enhancing the overall flight safety of military operations.
DRDO Successfully Flight Tests LRLACM
- DRDO conducted the maiden flight-test of Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on November 12, 2024, from a mobile articulated launcher.
- The missile performance was monitored by several range sensors like Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System and telemetry deployed by ITR at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the flight path.
- LRLACM has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bengaluru along with contribution from other DRDO laboratories and Indian industries.
1st All-women CISF Battalion
- Amit Shah has said that the government has approved 1st all-women battalion of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
- The Central Industrial Security Force has been a preferred choice for women who wish to serve the nation in Central Armed Police Force. The number of women in CISF is more than 7% at present.
- The CISF HQs has started preparations for the early recruitment, training and selection of location for the HQs of the new Battalion. The training is being specially designed to create an elite Battalion capable of performing multifarious role as Commandoes in VIP security and also security of airports, Delhi Metro Rail duties.
Exercise ‘SEA VIGIL-24’
- The Indian Navy conducted the fourth edition of the ‘Pan-India’ Coastal Defence Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-24’ on 20 & 21 Nov 24.
- The fourth edition of Ex Sea Vigil span an unprecedented scale, both in terms of geographical reach and the magnitude of participation, with involvement of 06 Ministries and 21 Organisations/ agencies.
- Originally conceptualised in 2018, Sea Vigil was designed to validate and enhance measures adopted to bolster Coastal Defence, post the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
- Serving as a precursor to the Theatre Level Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX), conducted biennially by the Indian Navy, Sea Vigil-24 will serve as an essential measure in reinforcing India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime boundaries.
35th Tri-services Commanders’ Conference
- Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan chaired the 35th Tri services Commanders’ Conference (TSTCC) at Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 13 November 2024.
- The Conference was attended by Commanders of all three services, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and Officers from various formations across the services.
- Taking forward the agenda set forth in the 34th TSTCC held in Shimla last year, the 35th edition reviewed the progress and outlined future plans to optimise training facilities across all three services for joint training.
India Ships First Akash System Battery To Armenia
- India marks another milestone in its defence export as it shipped the first Akash weapon system battery to Armenia. This is the second missile system to have been exported.
- The Akash system, developed by the DRDO is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) which can hit targets like fighter jets, missiles (cruise, air-to-surface), drones and other aerial assets to a range of 25km.Manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), each battery of Akash weapon system is accompanied by a single Rajendra 3D passive electronically scanned array radar and four launchers with three missiles each, all of which are interlinked.
- In 2022, Armenia inked a deal with India to procure 15 Akash missile systems worth around Rs 6,000 crore. It must be noted that Armenia has become the first foreign country to buy this missile system.
DRDO Successfully completes Flight Tests of Pinaka
- DRDO has successfully completed the Flight Tests of Guided Pinaka Weapon System as part of Provisional Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQR) Validation Trials. The flight tests have been conducted in three phases at different field firing ranges.
- Twelve (12) rockets from each production agency from two in-service Pinaka launchers upgraded by the launcher production agencies have been tested.

Romeos Done, Navy To Install Indigenous Software
- The Navy has decided to install the indigenously-developed software defined radio (SDR) in all its aerial assets.
- Its MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, also known as Romeos, have become the first naval aerial platform to be fitted with the indigenous system that allows encrypted communication.The SDR, which has been developed by the Navy along with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), is already fitted in its surface ships. The aerial platform doesn’t differ much from its surface counterpart in terms of functioning; it’s just much smaller, almost a miniaturised version.
- Back in February 2020, India had signed an agreement with the US to procure 24 MH-60Rs under the framework of foreign military sales (FMS). Nine have been delivered so far and the first squadron of these multi-role choppers, the INAS 334, was commissioned this March at INS Garuda in Kochi.
India Successfully Tests Long-range Hypersonic Missile
- India tested its first long range hypersonic missile on Saturday night, entering an elite club of nations that have the ability to launch a weapon that is almost impossible to intercept.
- The land-launched missile has been under development for the past decade and several variants are expected to enter service in the coming years. “The missile was tracked by various range systems, deployed in multiple domains.
- The flight data obtained from down range ship stations confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high degree of accuracy,” officials said. The missile has been indigenously developed by laboratories of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile complex, Hyderabad, along with various other DRDO laboratories and Industry Partners, they added.
- This hypersonic missile can reportedly carry various payloads for ranges over 1500km for all the Services of the Indian Armed Forces.
- Hypersonic weapons are those which travel at hypersonic speed, defined as between 5 and 25 times the speed of sound or about 1 to 5 miles per second.
- On November 12, DRDO conducted the maiden flight-test of Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha from a mobile articulated launcher.
Army’s Sankyukt Vimochan Exercise
- The Indian Army hosted Exercise Sanyukt Vimochan 2024 on November 18 and November 19. The exercise will be attended by representatives from nine friendly foreign countries.
- Exercise Sankyukt Vimochan is conducted by the Indian Army which is an annual joint Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Exercise (HADR).
- The exercise will bring together various armed forces, the Armed Forces, the Indian Coast Guard, and both Central and state agencies. It is conducted in Ahmedabad and Porbandar, Gujarat.
Culmination of Exercise – ‘SEA VIGIL 24’
- The fourth edition of the Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise Sea Vigil 24 concluded successfully on 21 Nov 24. This Exercise, conducted over a 36-hour period, demonstrated India’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its maritime security and coastal defence mechanisms.
- Spanning the entirety of India’s 11,098 km coastline and its Exclusive Economic Zone of 2.4 million sq. kms, Sea Vigil 24 witnessed the participation of over 21 agencies across six ministries.
- These included the Indian Navy, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, State Marine Police, Customs, BSF, CISF, Port Authorities and Fisheries department, among others.
11th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise & Workshop
- The 11th edition of Indian Coast Guard’s National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise & Workshop (SAREX-24) will be conducted under the aegis of National Maritime Search and Rescue Board in Kochi, Kerala on November 28-29, 2024.
- The event will be inaugurated by Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh. ICG Director General S Paramesh, who is also the National Maritime Search and Rescue Coordinating Authority, will be among the dignitaries attending the event.
- The theme will be ‘Enhancing Search and Rescue capabilities through Regional collaboration’. It signifies ICG’s commitment to provide succor during large-scale contingencies regardless of location, nationality or circumstances in the Indian Search & Rescue Region and beyond.
President’s Colours To Four Battalions of Mechanised Infantry
- General Upendra Dwivedi presented the prestigious President’s Colours to four battalions of the Mechanised Infantry during a solemn ceremony at the Mechanised Infantry Centre and School (MIC&S), Ahilyanagar.
- The President’s Colours were awarded to the 26th and 27th Battalions of Mechanised Infantry Regiment and 20th and 22nd Battalions of Brigade of The Guards, marking a proud moment for the youngest battalions of the Arm.
- Mechanised Infantry Arm, since its inception in 1979, has distinguished itself as a modern and professional force within the Indian Army, demonstrating exceptional courage, discipline, and operational proficiency in key operations such as Op PAWAN, Op VIJAY, Op RAKSHAK, and Op SNOW LEOPARD, as well as in UN peacekeeping missions.
Army Receives Sabal 20 Logistics Drone
- The Army has received Sabal 20 logistics drones procured from EndureAir Systems for deployment in the Eastern sector, the company announced.
- In another development, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) announced a major advancement in stealth technology by launching the Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System — Anālakshya.
- Sabal 20 is an electric unmanned helicopter based on variable pitch technology, and capable of carrying payloads of up to 20 kg, according to Endure Air, which was incubated at IIT-K in 2018.
- The drone features tandem rotor configuration and the design “ensures remarkable stability, superior high-altitude performance, minimised turbulence risk, and outstanding lifting capacity across diverse terrains”. The tender for these drones was issued around end of 2023 and the deliveries have just begun recently.
K-4 Ballistic Missile Test
- In a game-changing move, India has tested its K-4 missile from newly commissioned nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat on Wednesday.
- This nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), which has a strike range of 3,500 km, makes India’s nuclear deterrence credible for hostile countries.
- Only six countries in the world have submarines which are nuclear powered as well as can launch nuclear missiles: the US, Russia, China, France, the UK and India. Such a submarine is called SSBN (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear).
- India’s first SSBN, INS Arihant, became fully operational in 2018, while the second, INS Arighaat, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in August this year.
- The K-4 test adds long-range nuclear firepower to INS Arighaat. Its forerunner INS Arihant is armed only with 750-km range K-15 missiles while K-4 has a range of 3,500 km.
