South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Apologises For Martial Law Attempt
- South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday apologised for his brief attempt to impose martial law, offering to accept any legal consequences ahead of a parliamentary vote on his impeachment.
- Yoon Suk Yeol expressed deep regret for causing public concern and inconvenience, vowed never to seek martial law again, and stated that his People Power Party (PPP) would decide his political future. He also committed to facing any legal or political consequences for his actions.
- Immediately after the speech, PPP leader Han Dong-hun called for Yoon’s resignation, saying he was no longer fit for office. Opposition lawmakers filed an impeachment motion, but it was unclear whether they could secure the required two-thirds majority to pass it.
MHA Approved Release of ₹ 944.80 crore for Cyclone ‘Fengal’
- The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved release of 944.80 crore to State Government of Tamil Nadu, as both the installments of central share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to help the state in providing relief assistance to people affected by cyclone “Fengal’ on 30th November 2024.
- Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and guidance of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, the Modi government stands shoulder to shoulder with the states affected by natural calamities in mitigating the hardship faced by the people.
- Cyclonic Storm Fengal (feinjal) was a deadly tropical cyclone that brought significant flooding and damage to Southern India and Sri Lanka.
- The fourth cyclonic storm of the 2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, Fengal originated from a tropical disturbance off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on 14 November. It killed at least 37 people; 20 in India and 17 in Sri Lanka, along with 20 injuries.
- Saudi Arabia was responsible for naming the storm Fengal. The name itself is derived from the Arabic language.
- The naming of cyclones in the North Indian Ocean is managed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in collaboration with the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) panel on tropical cyclones.
- Bilateral relations between the two countries were elevated to the level of ‘Strategic Partnership‘ during the visit of Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to India in July 2007.
Commissioning of INS Tushil
- The Indian Navy is all set to commission its latest multi-role stealth guided missile frigate, INS Tushil, at Kaliningrad, Russia, on 09 Dec 24.
- INS Tushil is an upgraded Krivak III class frigates of the Project 1135.6 of which, six are already in service – three Talwar class ships, built at Baltiysky shipyard, St. Petersburg, and three follow-on Teg class ships, built at Yantar shipyard, Kaliningrad.
- INS Tushil, the seventh in the series, is the first of the two upgraded additional follow-on ships the contract for which was signed in Oct 2016 between JSC Rosoboronexport, Indian Navy and the Govt. of India.
- The ship’s name, Tushil, means ‘the protector shield’ and its crest represents the ‘Abhedya Kavacham’ (impenetrable shield). Along with its motto, ‘Nirbhay, Abhedya aur Balsheel’ (Fearless, Indomitable, Resolute), the ship stands as a symbol of the Indian Navy’s undying commitment to protect and safeguard the nation’s maritime frontiers.
- This 125 metre, 3900 ton ship, packs a lethal punch and is an impressive blend of Russian and Indian cutting edge technologies and best practices in warship construction.
Valedictory Function 24 Production Test Pilots Course
- The valedictory function of the 24 Production Test Pilots (PTP) Course was held at the Air Force Test Pilots School of Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) on 06 Dec 24.
- Air Force Test Pilots School (AFTPS), established under the aegis of ASTE, is a Centre of Excellence and the only institution in the country for training of experimental and production flight test crew for fixed wing, rotary wing and remotely piloted aircraft.In 1972, Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) first started training pilots of the Indian Air Force for production testing.
- Three years later, senior ASTE officers visited ETPS and studied its training methods. These were eventually used to start a course for experimental test flying in 1976.
- The IAF Test Pilots School, co-located with ASTE at Bangalore, conducts Experimental Flight Test Course (11 months ) for Test Pilots (TP) and Flight Test Engineers (FTE) from the Air Force, Naval Aviation and Army Aviation. The school is one among the eight recognized test pilots school in the world to impart flight test training.
BSF Launches Special Surveillance Project To Plug Over 600 Gaps On Pak, Bangla Borders
- The Border Security Force (BSF) has initiated a special electronic surveillance project to secure over 600 “vulnerable patches” along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders, covering areas where physical fencing is not feasible, the force chief said on Friday. Speaking at a press conference on the occasion of the 60th Raising Day of the force, BSF director general (DG) Daljit Singh Chawdhary said approximately 800 km of the 4,069 km India-Bangladesh border remains unfenced due to rivers and other geographical challenges.
- Last year in December during the BSF Raising Day at Hazaribag in Jharkhand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that India’s two most important borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh will be completely secured in the next two years.
- Chawdhary said that a “stern direction” has been given to BSF troops that “no infiltration should take place” along the 2,289 km long India-Pakistan international border (IB) guarded by it on the country’s western flank running along the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu.
