Keel Laying of Sixth Ship Magdala
- Keel Laying of the sixth ship (BY 528, Magdala) of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW SWC) project was undertaken in presence of RAdm Satish Shenai, CSO (Training), Southern Naval Command on 17 Dec 24.
- Contract for building eight ASW SWC ships was awarded to Cochin Shipyard Limited by the Ministry of Defence on 30 Apr 19.
- The ships known as the ‘Mahe’ class, will be equipped with indigenously developed, state-of-the-art underwater sensors, and are envisaged to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters as well as Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and Mine Laying Operations.
- The first ship of the project is planned to be delivered in early 2025.
CAG Report Flags ‘Persistent Delays’ In Finalisation Of Court Of Inquiry Proceedings
- A CAG report for the year ending March 2021 has flagged “persistent delays” in the finalisation of the Court of Inquiry proceedings in the Army and cited that out of 95 cases involving financial loss in three commands, stipulated timeline for assembly and completion of CoI was met “only in 46 and 25 cases”.
- The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Union government (Defence Services-Army) was presented in Parliament on Tuesday.
- “The financial losses of Rs 7.12 crore were regularised in respect of 43 cases (April 2022). However, in 52 cases involving financial loss of Rs 43.64 crore, the information relating to regularization of loss by Competent Financial Authority was not available,” the statement said.
- The Comptroller and Auditor General of India is the supreme audit institution of India, established under Article 148 of the Constitution of India.
- They are empowered to audit all receipts and expenditure of the Government of India and the State Governments, including those of autonomous bodies and corporations substantially financed by the government.
- The Comptroller and Auditor-General of India is appointed by the President of India.
Indian Defence Forces Looking To Expand Space Assets, Manpower
- Preparing for future warfare, the Indian defence forces are aiming to expand their assets in space and bolster the strength of the agencies responsible for these tasks.
- Plans to strengthen the Defence Space Agency and other related organisations come shortly after the government approved the space-based surveillance project, under which 52 satellites will be launched for surveillance, communication, and other strategic objectives.
- The Defence Space Agency is also tasked with increasing the number of assets in space while ensuring their protection from all types of threats.
Russia’s Nuke Forces Chief Igor Kirillov Killed
- A top Russian general heading the country’s Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defence Forces (NBC) and his assistant were killed in a bomb blast Tuesday. Lt Gen. Igor Kirillov’s killing came a day after Ukraine accused him of ordering use of banned chemical weapons.
- Russia’s federal investigating agency, the Investigative Committee, said the high-ranking general was killed when a device hidden in a scooter exploded as he was leaving a residential block. The device was detonated remotely.‘Steel Cutting’ ceremony of the first ship of Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV), was held at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on 16 Dec 24, Kochi in the presence of Cmde S Parthiban, Warship Production Superintendent, Kochi.Contract for construction of six NGMVs was concluded with CSL in March 2023 with induction of the ships in the Indian Navy planned from 2027 onwards.
- The NGMVs are planned to be installed with state-of-the-art weapon and sensors, which would significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy as a Future Ready and Combat Ready Force.Trump said several times Monday that he believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin wouldn’t have invaded if he were still in office and criticized President Joe Biden’s administration for a decision to allow Ukraine to use Army Tactical Missile Systems, known as ATACMS, to strike back deeper into Russian territory. The missiles have a range of about 300 kilometers, or 190 miles.
- Trump said it would take a century to rebuild Ukrainian cities leveled by the Russian invasion and brushed aside Ukrainian hopes of recapturing seized territory. He again criticized the use of US weapons to strike targets deeper into Russian territory – a tactic done after approval by the current White House, raising the likelihood that he’ll balk at extending that authority if fighting continues.
Indonesia Shows Interest in Collaborating with India
- Indonesia has shown keen interest in collaborating with India in the defence technology domain as Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi held wide-ranging talks with top military brass of the Southeast Asian nation on boosting strategic ties.
- Ways to forge bilateral collaboration in the area of defence technologies figured prominently in a meeting between Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Admiral Tripathi.
- The two sides discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation and various aspects of defence collaboration, including joint exercises, the Indonesian defence ministry said.
- Indonesia is a key member of the 10-nation ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) grouping.
Doval in Beijing to Attend India-China Special Representatives Talks
- National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived here on Tuesday to take part in the India-China Special Representatives’ talks to be held on Wednesday aimed at restoring the bilateral ties stalled for over four years’ due to the military standoff in eastern Ladakh.
- Doval will hold the 23rd round of the Special Representatives’ (SR) talks with his Chinese counterpart and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and was expected to discuss a range of issues to rebuild the bilateral ties following the October 21 agreement of disengagement and patrolling in eastern Ladakh between the two countries.
- Ahead of crucial talks, China said on Tuesday that it is ready to honour commitments based on the common understandings reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during their meeting at Kazan in Russia on the sidelines of the BRICS summit on October 24.
- China stands ready to work with India to deliver on important common understandings reached between our two leaders, enhance mutual trust and mutual confidence through dialogue and communication, honour our commitments and promote our bilateral relations to go back to the sound and steady growth, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a media briefing when asked about SR talks.
