Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) for the Indian Navy at a cost of approximately Rs 2,960 crore. The MRSAM system is a standard fit, onboard multiple Indian Naval Ships and is planned to be fitted on the majority of the future platforms planned for acquisition.
The contract marks a critical milestone in the ongoing efforts to bolster India’s defence capabilities and indigenise advanced military technology. With the emphasis on ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, the missiles would be supplied by BDL under ‘Buy (Indian)’ category with largely indigenous content. The contract would generate employment of approx. 3.5 lakh man days in the defence industry, including various MSMEs.
MRSAM
Medium Range Surface – To – Air Missile (MRSAM) is a high response, quick reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile, designed to neutralize enemy aerial threats – missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, helicopters. Used by Army, Navy and Air Force as different variants.
BDL
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is one of India’s manufacturers of ammunitions and missile systems. It was founded in 1970 in Hyderabad, India. BDL is the nodal agency for the production of missiles developed by India. The first such missile that entered production of dynamics with BDL was the Prithvi missile. Since its inception, BDL has been working in collaboration with DRDO & foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for manufacture and supply of various missiles and allied equipment to Indian Armed Forces.
