Ukraine Distributes First Military Trucks as Part of Major Defense Contract

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has initiated the distribution of a new fleet of all-wheel drive military trucks to the armed forces’ combat brigades as part of a state-guarantee contract with a domestic manufacturing partner. In this initial rollout, 80 trucks have been allocated for use in combat operations and special mission support, marking a significant development in bolstering the military’s logistical capabilities.

This acquisition is part of a broader framework announced last November, with the ultimate goal of procuring as many as 200 units. The project is backed by a substantial budget of 4.4 billion hryvnias, equivalent to approximately $105.2 million, which will be fully financed by the state budget. The Ukrainian government has stated that over 50 percent of the production will take place within the country’s borders, supporting local industry.

Hlib Kanevskyi, the Director of Procurement Policy at the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, confirmed that the state contract was signed in December 2024, leading to the rapid procurement and receipt of the first batch of military trucks, featuring both 4×4 and 6×6 wheel configurations. These vehicles are specifically designed for the transportation of personnel and military cargo, enhancing the operational capacity of the armed forces.

Kanevskyi highlighted that this endeavor is part of a larger initiative aimed at addressing gaps in the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. To facilitate this comprehensive enhancement, approximately 30 billion hryvnias, or around $717.8 million, has been earmarked for future undertakings, all of which will follow the parameters of state-guarantee agreements.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Defence plans to shift its focus toward acquiring more offensive capabilities for the military after the successful introduction of the trucks. “In 2024 the Ministry of Defense has emphasized the procurement of military equipment for the rear: armored cars and medevacs, special cargo equipment, bath and laundry complexes, fuel stations, etc.,” Kanevskyi elaborated. He also indicated that in 2025, the strategy will pivot toward acquiring advanced tools aimed at maximizing damage to the enemy, underlining the ongoing commitment to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the face of ongoing challenges.
