GM Defense has secured a significant contract with the US Army to supply its Infantry Squad Vehicles (ISVs), according to a recent announcement from the US Department of Defense. The awarded contract, valued at $44.8 million, operates under a firm-fixed-price model, although the exact number of vehicles to be supplied remains undisclosed. Future orders will determine specific work locations and funding allocations. Deliveries of the ISVs are anticipated to continue through December 2025.
The ISV, designed to meet the US Army’s modern light utility vehicle needs, is built upon the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 midsize truck framework. Approximately 90 percent of the vehicle’s components are sourced from commercial-off-the-shelf products, facilitating efficient production while aligning with military specifications.
Key features of the ISV include a robust 2.8-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine that delivers 275 horsepower, paired with an automatic six-speed transmission. The vehicle is equipped with a rollover protection system and infrared lights to enhance operational safety and visibility during nighttime missions. The design also allows for the integration of various armaments, including counter-drone laser energy weapons, light and heavy machine guns, and grenade launchers.
With a payload capacity of 3,200 pounds (1,451 kilograms), the ISV can accommodate seating configurations for up to nine passengers, making it a versatile option for military personnel. It is engineered for mobility and can be transported by UH-60 Blackhawk, CH-47 Chinook, and CH-53 Stallion helicopters. Additionally, the vehicle can be deployed via low-velocity airdrop from major cargo aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130 Hercules, and A400M Atlas.
The establishment of this contract follows a week-long demonstration of the ISV platform conducted for the UAE Armed Forces in March of the previous year. This trial is part of the UAE’s strategic initiative to incorporate ISVs into its military framework while also bolstering its industrial base through local vehicle development. The successful demonstration highlights the vehicle’s capabilities and adaptability, positioning it as a competitive option for international military markets.
